What is Meghalayan Age? Meghalayan Age refers to the last 4,200 years till the present date, which is a distinct stage in the geologic classification of Earth’s age.
4200 years ago, a drought swept away the agricultural societies across the globe, wiping out civilizations from ancient Egypt to Mesopotamia, Palestine and the Yangtze River Valley. This cataclysmic event marks the beginning of a new geologic age: the Late Holocene Meghalayan, which encompasses everything from the start of the drought to the present.
The Meghalayan Age is named after Meghalaya, which is a small state in the northeastern region of India, because, proof of the Meghalayan was found while studying the chemical make-up of the staglagmite located in the Krem Mawmluh caves of Meghalaya.
The Meghalayan Age has been officially ratified by the International Commission on Stratigraphy in July 2018.
