Plain and simple, a meta is the best way to play/ do whatever you're doing, while also having one or more strategies. Games like League of Legends have metas, because each character can be customized so much. However, metas are not stuck to just one player, but there can be entire team metas. Rainbow Six Siege, for example, has team metas. Some characters in Siege can only be played so well without other characters to combine abilities with.
