3 Iconic 3D Games that did it First on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

The SNES is one of the most iconic consoles ever, but only a select few games pushed it to its absolute limit.

Before 3D games made an appearance on the SNES, the only place you would find such games were in Arcades or on PC's with there more powerful chipsets. But thanks to the Super FX processor inside this little box of dreams, it enables some of the most legendary games to appear in your homes on a console for the first time ever.

Here are 3 fully 3D games that appeared on the Super Nintendo.

3 – Stunt Race FX.

Although on the surface this game does resemble Mario Kart 64, this game could arguably be the farther of the famous 3D Mario race game.
Unlike Mario Kart 64, this game only had 3 cars to choose from, an F-type, Coupé and a 4WD monster truck. There is also 2 unlockable cars too, a 2WD and a Semi truck. This was because of the file size restrictions, being able to have several playable cars to race and a few more race tracks to race on.
Although now it may not look like much, but back then, this was the first of its kind and graphics like this wouldn't be seen again until the N64.
Despite the small playable game, it played very smoothly and was very responsive to player input. Another first for true polygonal gaming on a games console.

2 – Vortex.

This game was developed by Argonaut Games, the exact same company who designed the Super FX coprocessor for the SNES. So it makes sense that they would be the ones that developed a game that would take full advantage of there own creation.
Just like its predecessor, StarFox, this game too featured many of the same graphical assets and narrative. With one exception, the game featured not only space battles, but now had the inclusion of ground battles too with a fully animated character that you control. They took the original idea and took it to the next level, squeezing every drop of performance out of there chipset to make a game that is both enjoyable to play, and memorable one too.

1 – StarFox (aka StarWing)

When we talk about games that were true 3D for the SNES, StarFox is the first game most people think of. And there is good reason for that too.
Although 3D games have been seen in arcades and on PC's in the past, and there have been one or two, 2.5D games seen on the SNES (Doom), It was StarFox that people remember as the first True 3D game on the SNES. And it is also no surprise that it was made by the same people who introduced the first 3D accelerator chip into a games console, Argonaut Games.
Using simple geometric shapes, some cleaver background animations and awesome music, combined with a very simple story and some characters, made The most iconic game that was available for the SNES. A simple rail shooter to allow you to fly through space and across land blowing shit up and trying not to die at the same time. Although it was a very linear game, it was amazing fun to play. Just one of the many reasons why this game sold so well and why it is routed into pop culture.

There were of course a few more 3D games available for the SNES, but not as iconic or that pushed the limits of 3D graphics, as the ones in this short, but ever so sweet list.
