Being ultimate all-around gamer, helps me sense all benefits of different genres. Everybody is talking about how games can be bad for us, and even i pointed some problems in one of my previous posts . It is only fair to look at things from another perspective.
I have an idea of dedicating one post for every genre. Today we will talk about how RTS help us improve in life:
RTS - real time strategies
One of my favorite genres, RTS games help us decide faster, even more on competitive level. Taking care of both micromanagment and micromanagment, we are deciding almost every second of the game itself. Prioritizing resource gathering, expansions, building placement, analyzing terrain, and constantly worrying about pace of the game are all aspects that have to be taken care of. So lets talk about specifics.
Micromanagment
Micromanagment includes everything that is about tuning and finesse. Micromanagment in combat includes pulling injured units, keeping formation, giving individual orders instead of letting AI do that job. As a rule of thumb proper micromanagment will always do better. These optimizations will often put us in a mindset that everything can be done better next time, which can be also applied in real life. Because EVERYTHING MATTERS at least a bit.
Macromanagment
RTS games are about acquiring wealth which is used to grow and expand. Spending and acquiring. Knowing if something is needed now or later. Good macromanagment in RTS teach us how not to be impulsive buyer. It also helps us with tunnel vision. Sometimes its not worth spending time doing certain actions, and cutting losses on time is valuable perk. Scheduling and planning tasks come naturally.
Searching for weakspot
Part of every RTS is to analyze enemy defense, and to beat it cost-effectively. In everyday life we are facing problems that can tire us down quickly if we try to tackle it in most obvious way. Gamers enjoy creative approach, searching for easiest solution. Problem solving makes our life easier.
Shortcomings
Avoiding fights we can't win saves us from wasting time and energy. Identifying lost cause, and avoiding impossible situations seem a little easier after mastering RTS genre. Who wouldn't be a little more careful after being stomped and punished for every mistake over and over again.
Building placement and terrain
Map is deciding factor whether something makes sense or not, being resourceful and doing most with what is given, teach us how to adapt to different situations. Organisation makes everything smooth, logical and faster. Keeping environment tidy will come naturally for RTS fans. Everything has its place, and is found instantly.
Pace
Ordinary people aren't in a hurry, acting as if they are going to live 100 years. They don't respect time as a valuable resource as much as strategy players do. Timing attacks, visiting places before others, holding monopoly, being step ahead, makes or breaks final result.
