The importance of school gardens
Many people think that school is only learned in the classroom. Now we realize that the general environment of the school affects the development of children.
The grounds of the schools are:
• a source of food to improve children's diet and health;
• a source of healthy influences (drinking water, physical activity, latrines or hygienic toilets, toilets and school lunches);
• a place to learn (about nature, agriculture and nutrition);
• a place for enjoyment and recreation (flowers, bushes, shade, playgrounds and places where meals are consumed);
• a constant lesson about the environment and a reason for pride in the school itself.
The asphalt, the dry land, the mud and the uncultivated lands are transformed into green fields, in open-air laboratories, in plots for the cultivation of vegetables, in grass gardens, in spaces for games and study areas. School gardens are leading these changes.
SECRETS OF SUCCESS
1.- What is the creation of a school garden?
Support for
The school garden will thrive if it has the support of:
• local education authorities;
• the principal of the school;
• the whole school;
• parents and the community.
Participation and contacts Take care of yourself:
• interest local agriculture and health services;
• interest the community, for example experts,
counselors, collaborators and observers;
• interest the school feeding program;
• create a support group of interested, active and effective people;
• be in contact with other schools that have gardens.
Sustainability
It is a good idea:
• start with a small garden and expand it later;
• establish and maintain a good water supply and fences;
• know how the garden will be financed or self-financed;
• use organic methods to improve and conserve the soil;
• choose crops that adapt to local conditions and
correspond to food traditions and habits, have a
high nutritional value, contribute to food security, be
easy to grow and fit the calendar or school period.
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
• Consult the principal of the school about the idea of a school garden.
• Decide who will be the garden "boss".
• Find out if the education authorities, the health and agriculture services and the council
local can support the school garden, including the possibilities of financing.
• Study the possibility of training the school staff.
One of the plans or priority projects of the center is to develop a quality education.
• Begin to deal informally with the garden issue with school staff, parents, the community, and the school feeding service. Take note of the ideas and feelings and fears related to this work. Do not commit to a specific plan; leave the matter open.
• Ask the children an opinion about the gardens, horticulture and food from the garden.
Results: Ideas for the school garden; Notes on problems, risks and attitudes.
2.- What is the creation of a school garden?
• ensure that there will be a substitute manager who will take charge of the garden in cases of emergency or illness;
• have trained and experienced teachers and assistants to pass on their knowledge to others.
TIPS AND IDEAS
• Ask the art students to copy the poster "Cultivate the garden and develop oneself" on this page. Adapt it as necessary to the context itself.
• Take photographs of possible locations in the garden.
• Visit the neighborhood vegetable gardens to get inspiration and ideas.
• Get in touch with other schools that have a garden.
• Start a "garden file" to store all the documents related to the garden.
