A way out . #weekendfreewrite

A whitish porridge is consumed in the uncooked stage as the basic food." Deal with it, Maggie shouted at the new girl.

She was the eldest at the orphanage. One of her responsibilities was to make sure everyone ate.

She looks angry. Well, everyone was angry here. Angry that their parents couldn't care enough to want them. Angry that they had to wait on strangers to take a pity look at them every other day and select them like groceries shopping, select the ones they will like to take home with them to adopt.

Harley stared at the miserly looking thing in her plate and dipped are spoon through it to get a spoonful.

Anna, the new girl was crying now, removing the dropping mucous with the back of her hand.

She was 9. She got to the orphanage yesterday. No one knew her story yet. Here, Everyone had a story.

She looked up and caught Harley's eyes on her but Harley quickly looked away.

It's time for siesta and Harley laid on her bed pretending to be asleep. She was lost in thought. But the outmost reach of her imagination did not go beyond picturing her usual life in a new settings.

She didn't mind. So far she was out of this place. She just didn't want to be called an orphan anymore. So whenever they were told to expect a couple or two. She would be on her best behaviour. She would take her bath twice and scrub her body harder so she doesn't smell funny. But, every time she wasn't picked. It was like she didn't exist. They always walked past her to the other children.

This time she had decided things would be different, because she had a plan.

Don't forget to lay out your white dresses for tomorrow. We do not want to keep our visitors waiting, Maggi announced across the hall as she did the last bed check for the night.

Harley bent under her wardrobe to take a peak at her dress and she smiled, tomorrow will be good, she thought.

The next morning, they were all dressed and made their way to the display room. All in the same white puffy lace dress except for Harley. She wore her red dress. She had never liked it. But, the colour would stand out amongst others, this would get her the attention she needed. So she wore it for the greater good. Everyone stared in dismay when she walked in to join the other kids

They all murmured about her dress except for Anna who was standing beside her.

Why red? Anna asked her.

"What ?"

I asked why you have on a red dress, when we are suppose to wear the white, Anna repeated.

Harley smiled at her and looked towards the door as the guardian and the couple entered the room.

The couple were pretty, they must be rich. Harley thought.

The wife moved closer to get a closer look at the children, Harley was smiling at her, she saw her and smiled back.

After some minutes they were all walked back to their rooms.

They waited in their corridor awaiting the news. Harley was sure she had scooped a parent. And when she saw Maggie walking towards them, she could feel the butterflies fluttering in her stomach.

Anna, Maggie said.
They picked you.
