Stand up Harry Kane. Tottenham striker Harry Kane broke Alan Shearer’s 22-year Premier League record for scoring goals in a calendar year.
Alan Shearer’s 36 goals in 42 games record has stood since 1995. Harry Kane shattered that yesterday as he smashed his second hat rick in 2 games to amass a staggering 39 goals in 2017. To make it more record breaking, Kane did it in 6 games fewer than the Geordie legend.
For club and country this year, Kane has scored 56 goals in 52 games. He is Europe's top scorer over the past 12 months in the five major countries (England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France), beating Lionel Messi with 54 goals in 62 games.
The Premier League is without doubt the most competitive league in the world, and scoring goals isn’t as easy for teams as it is for Barcelona and Real Madrid in the world’s second most competitive league. Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo and others often score hat ricks, but this year alone Kane has scored a staggering 8 Premier League hat ricks.
Those 8 hat ricks this year alone is as many as Thierry Henry and Michael Owen did in their careers. Only Alan Shearer with 11 and Robbie Fowler with 9 have scored more career hat ricks. With Kane only 24 years old, it’s difficult to imagine him not shattering that record, very soon, no doubt.
Comparing Kane to teams, the 24-year-old has scored more league goals this season than Bournemouth, West Brom, Swansea, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Huddersfield. That is a phenomenal record for one player, and Tottenham are reaping the benefits of having such a player.
Speaking of Tottenham, Kane has now scored 96 Premier League goals for the club, one behind Teddy Sheringham's record of 97. No doubt that will go very very soon.
It’s an exciting time in the Premier League, with all the foreign stars coming. Many people will say Messi and Ronaldo are the best players in the world, and no doubt they are. But, we can now say the Premier League has a someone who can now make that a triumvirate.
