ARE COCKROACHES EATABLE?

As they say, "One man's food is another's poison". Few days ago i was watching a video of a man eating cockroach, i felt irritated and displeased. Then a question came to my mind "Why in the world will someone eat cockroach?", without much hesitation i decided to make a quick research.

In my country Nigeria and some other related countries not all insect most especially cockroach are considered as food source. But it is been eaten by so many countries and cultures most especially in Asia. China is even going extra miles to breed them, infact cockroach farms are thriving business in China.

Yes, cockroaches are edible and healthy to eat provided it is been cooked very well to kill the bacteria germs present in it. Usually this is accomplished by frying the roaches in vegetable oil, which also gives them a crunchy and crispy texture.

On a side note, the giant Madagascar hissing cockroach is a well known species of edible cockroach. Supposedly the taste of the hissing cockroach is reminiscent of greasy chicken.

In 2010 a study conducted by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science showed that they powerful antibiotic properties in the brains of cockroaches which would help treat multi-drug resistant bacterial infections. According to the study, the tissues of the brain and nervous system of the cockroach can kill more than 90% of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and Pathogenic Escherichia without harming human cells.

Also cockroaches are good sources of daily protein when consumed. If cockroaches are plentiful and cheap, and also tasty, why shouldn’t they be eaten? It only makes sense. For most people, it’s just a matter of getting over your pre-existing hangups about cockroaches being dirty and disgusting. However, this may prove to be quite a high hurdle, indeed, for some.
