What The?? Cotton Candy Tacos In Texas? That Can't Be Right!

What in the world is going on here? State Fairs are for junk food but that's going a little overboard ain't it? My gosh. lol.

I don't know about where you all live but in Texas the top prizes for vendor foods at the State Fair is a big deal. Lots of exposure, notoriety, fame and of course fortune comes with the winning item featured in magazines and newscasts all over the state.

This year's vaunted winner of culinary delight is just what the title says..A Cotton Candy Taco! A little bit shocking.
Here's what it looks like:

Here's how the ABC channel 8 wfaa, describes it:

"Claiming their second Most Creative win – this year's sweet creation starts with a graham cracker waffle cone batter that is squeezed into a crunchy taco shell shape.

The taco is then coated with a marshmallow glaze and stuffed with chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and organic cane sugar cotton candy. The taco is topped off with chocolate cookie crumbles and two chocolate cream-covered biscuit sticks with marshmallows."

How does that sound folks? It IS organic for those wanting to convince themselves that they're eating healthy! I think I'll still go for the traditional Texas smoked brisket taco myself.

And here's the second place winner, it has a great name:
Fernie's Hoppin' John Cake with Jackpot Sauce! lol. I wonder what makes Hoppin John hop?

This is how it's decribed:

"The classic ingredients of creamy, nutty black-eyed peas, fluffy white rice, spicy smoke sausage, green onions, and a secret blend of special spices are mixed with bread crumbs and eggbeaters to form a Texas-sized cake.

Then, the cake is deep fried and topped with a zingy black-eyed pea relish, garnished with pickled okra, and served with a side of Jackpot sauce."

Now this one I can see getting, it was voted the "most savory." And of course everything is deep fried so it's gonna be delicious.

A few years ago Texas ranked right up there among the fattest states as far as overweight populations but now we're at least a little way down the list. Must be all those health-conscious Californians moving here.

For the fun of it I looked up where we rank just now:

1 Mississippi
2 West Virginia
3 Arkansas
4 Kentucky
5 Tennessee
6 Louisiana
7 Alabama
8 South Carolina
9 Oklahoma
10 Texas
11 Indiana
12 Ohio
13 Delaware
14 Georgia
15 Michigan
16 Missouri
17 North Carolina
18 Iowa
19 Maine
20 Kansas
21 Wisconsin
22 Rhode Island
23 Nebraska
24 Maryland
25 Pennsylvania
26 Wyoming
27 North Dakota
28 Illinois
29 Florida
30 Alaska
31 Virginia
32 New Mexico
33 South Dakota
34 Washington
35 New Hampshire
36 Arizona
37 New York
38 Minnesota
39 Nevada
40 Idaho
41 New Jersey
42 Oregon
43 Vermont
44 Connecticut
45 Montana
46 California
47 District of Columbia
48 Massachusetts
49 Hawaii
50 Utah
51 Colorado

The only surprise to me is that Alabama wasn't in first or second place. Maybe next year. But you notice anything telling about the list?

ALL Southern states where they fry EVERYTHING..and I mean everything ... deep fried in lard and junk like that. Shoot, they even deep fry Twinkies down there!

Ok, I didn't really mean to turn this into a campaign against fried foods and fat states. Go and enjoy yourself at your state fairs. If it's in Texas then I'm sure it's coming to yours too but don't worry about it. Pig out. But only ONCE A YEAR if it's state fair food!
