🥜 How to Make Your own Healthy Homemade Peanut Butter 🥜

IMG_1564-min.JPG

I love peanut butter, I have it with my morning oats, on toast and I even use it in my choc chip cookies that I posted a few days ago. The list goes on and on. I can't get enough of it! This peanut butter is so easy to make and store that I make it at least once a week. 🤤

Now, making homemade peanut butter is quicker to make (and often healthier) than buying peanut butter ready made. With a homemade recipe you can skip all of unhealthy added preservatives, salts and sugars you find in peanut butter from the store.

This is my second entry into the #veganuarycontest created by the wonderful @lolzwithlisa. If you're interested in joining for the last week of Veganuary, check out the contest here 👉👉 How to Enter the Veganuary Contest 🌱

What you need:

  • Raw peanuts 🥜
  • Pink himalayan salt
  • Liquid sweetener (maple syrup works best)
  • Strong food processor 💪🏻

Step 1: Roasting Your Peanuts

The peanuts should be roasted before putting them in the food processor, this gives the peanut butter a rich taste. You don't have to roast them but if you do it also helps with step 2 as it makes the skins of the peanuts come off easily.

To roast your peanuts, preheat your oven to 350 F/180°C. Spread the peanuts out in an even layer on a baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until they have become more golden and have a strong nutty smell.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Prepping the Peanuts

Here you can decide to leave the skins on the peanuts or if you want to shell the peanuts. Leaving the skin on increases the nutrient value of your peanut butter due to the peanut skin's high antioxidant content. You can read more here.

Step 3: Making your Peanut Butter

After roasting and prepping the peanuts, we're ready to make the butter.

Note: If you want a crunchy peanut butter, take a handful of roasted peanuts and pulse them in the food processor a few times. Remove them and set aside. You can add them after the rest of the nuts have been processed into smooth peanut butter.

Take the roasted peanuts and place them in the food processor. First pulse them 5-10 times to break the nuts up and then turn the processor on the lowest speed for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, stop, scrape down the sides of the food processor and turn the processor on high for 7-10 minutes. From here you can decide what consistency you would like your peanut butter to be and stop when you feel it's smooth enough for you.

My favourite way to eat some peanut butter is on toast with maple syrup. What is yours? 🍞
