بدأ عمله كرئيس لنادي ريال مدريد الإسباني في عام 2000 بوعود ضخمة، كان أبرزها التعاقد مع لويس فيجو من برشلونة، واستمر عمله كرئيس حتى عام 2006 حيث استقال من رئاسة النادي بسبب العديد من الانتقادات التي وجهت له في تلك الفترة.
