Plot

In a post-apocalyptic world where water has become the most precious resource due to its scarcity, provoking violent wars for its possession, Ernest Holm tries to get water supply for his lands and take care of his family, while Sam Lever, a young man related to Ernest's daughter, it will be a big problem.

Opinion

Young Ones narrates a story located in a kind of semi-dystopian future in which water is scarce, there Ernest Holm takes care of his family, his son Jerome and his daughter Mary, and his wife Katherine, who remains permanently hospitalized because of a accident, Ernest brings water to men who work distributing the water they extract from deep wells. When Ernest's mule dies, he goes to Sam Lever's auction house, where he buys a new robot mule that Flem, Sam's son, a troubled young man who has a relationship with Mary without Ernest's consent, also wanted to buy.

Maintaining a style highly inspired by Western cinema, the film tells a story of revenge and generational struggle, a young woman, a land, and a robot mule are disputed by the characters throughout the story, which is divided into three chapters, each dedicated to the male characters of the film; Enest, Flem and Jerome.

Jake Paltrow, who also directed the films The Good Night and De Palma, ten NYPD Blue episodes and two Boardwalk Empire episodes, manages to keep a careful and polished photograph, however, he does not do the best execution of some scenes, especially in the final part of the film, where an important and defining event is practically introduced in a very improbable way. In this way, the film, divided into three parts, becomes less interesting as it progresses, and the final result is easily predictable.

The main reason why I decided to see the film was Michael Shannon, and his work was good, while the film focused on his character kept me entertained, however, in the second chapter the film focuses mainly on Nicholas Hoult character, and I felt that the film lost interest, however, because the plot of his character was the only one that moved by itself, it is also acceptable, so the biggest problem comes when the camera follows Kodi Smit-McPhee story, an actor that I personally did not know even though he has participated in some big films recently, and the cause is not that the actor does his work badly, but that Paltrow's script was not solid enough, female characters have virtually no depth and development, and the way in which the incidents that lead the narrative are executed was not good.

It's a shame because probably the film could have been much better, however, it's not completely bad, it can be seen but without expectations in it.

Score

6/10

A plot that promised a lot, but that has not fulfilled expectations, the story of revenge is not powerful enough, the execution of important events was not good either, but it is still an acceptable movie.
