While filming a wedding, my filmmaking partner Alex said he had to make a short for his horror class. I pitched him the idea of a VR world where you had to fight monsters, but it was more like real life and we filmed the next day.
It wasn't till mid-filming that someone mentioned the similarities to the idea of "Jumanji", which after they said that, felt so obvious that we included the joke in the short.
A highlight for me was incorporating the CG monster into the end. I built the shot with 3 elements - A video of the trees without the actor 2. A shot of the actor in front of the blue sky and 3 a monster puppet I downloaded for the open source 3d animation software "Blender".
After all the elements were in place, I added some camera shake in post production to sell the shot. It's not perfect, Play Station 2 graphics at best, but it was my first go at it.
The beginning drags a little but once he gets into the VR world I think we created something fun. At the very least, we had a blast making it and it only took a day.
