Capsule Film Review: Dr. No (1962)

The first film in James Bond series is among those that are closest to the spirit of the Ian Fleming’s original novels. The plot is set in Fleming’s favourite island of Jamaica and shows how British secret agent James Bond (played by Sean Connery) comes there to investigate murder of his colleagues and how the trail leads him to the brilliant but malevolent scientist Dr. Julius No (played by Joseph Wiseman) who uses nuclear technology to sabotage US space program. Well-directed by Terence Young, Dr. No puts exotic locations to good use, while the script combines mystery with increasingly spectacular action. Connery’s Bond is introduced as a character deeply amoral and controversial for his time – apart from enjoying cigars, drink and women he kills people in cold blood and sexually exploits female enemy agents. Thanks to Connery’s talent and charisma, film nevertheless works and Ursula Andress as the first proper Bond girl only adds to the mix that would be even more successful in future sequels.
