Here on Steemit everything is blockchain centered, but I also use another and slightly older social network with many of the same features: decentralised, censorship free, and compared to blockchains-data you can choose to share with whom you like.
Diaspora was the first piece of software making it possible to create a federated social network on our own server, but many more has joined after that and most of them can communicate. The principle is simple - privately owned servers that can "talk" together and make an experience that looks like Facebook, Google + or Twitter. The simplicity of the idea is what makes it a great technology - but it does take some idealism to run a server and if you are not a sysadmin yourself you will have to rely on the works of other... not really any different than the rest of our lives, and not different from the dependence you would have on Facebook.
One of the things that has not been available was video. The commercial monoliths like Google (youtube) and Facebook has financed the expensive hosting of videos by collecting big data, but to small individual servers it would be a catastrophe if such a video went viral, probably crashing the server.
But via the WebRTC protocol there is now a federated video service that can distribute the video in a bittorrent-like fashion from the web browser. It is called PeerHub and just made a successful fund-raiser to improve the software!

I use Diaspora as a closed family network, I have a recreational profile where I post music, art and whatever and then I have a profile which were the first place I started showing my art under the Katharsisdrill pseudonym.
