Lepidoptera are different. There is a nondescript, gray mouses. There are all sorts of colorful-red, orange, yellow, green, blue... And there is transparent, as if their wings are made of glass or from the finest plates of mica. About one of these cute insects will be discussed in this post.
This is the Glass Butterfly (Greta oto).
The wingspan of these butterflies are small - about 5 - 6 cm, but their beauty compensates the relatively small size. The body of this butterfly is refined and elegant, legs and antennae are thin and long, and complement all this beauty of the air-transparent wings with a brown border and a white band at the end.
Although this butterflies lead a single life, they tend to stray into small flocks. Despite the external fragility, they are very hardy and if necessary are able to migrate over long distances. Very interesting behavior of males during sexual activity. In a hot stuffy afternoon, they gather somewhere under the sheet and begin to release their odorous sexual pheromones into the air, and females flutter around them and look for the most suitable male for procreation.
These butterflies live in the South American rainforests. There they are common and occur almost EN masse. Two factors contribute to this. First, they are poisonous. And secondly, their forage plant (Сestrum) is one of the main species that make up the undergrowth. Now they have become quite popular - these Lepidoptera are often shown at exhibitions of butterflies.
