Intergenerational Trauma: CPS's Role in Displacing Children for Centuries
MORE THAN 11000 CHILDREN ARE WARDS OF MANITOBA
90% ARE INDIGENOUS BOYS AND GIRLS
TORN FROM THEIR HOMES AND PLACED IN CPS CARE 1
Furthermore, the FNFAO aims to support healing from the intergenerational trauma of the colonization of Canada's First Nations, through the sharing of traditional knowledge of Native Elders and Grandmothers, and uphold the First Nations Rights of the Child, Parent, Family, and Extended Family.
This is exactly the direction that needs to be explored in order for real healing to be achieved in these communities.
In May 2014 the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs held community engagement events in which First Nations families shared stories of the crimes committed against their families. The information gathered from these sessions was used to compile a list of recommendations for the government in a report titled “Bringing Our Children Home”(BOCH) This report was provided to both the federal and provincial governments.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs took matters into their own hands and without financial support from the government began to implement the principles of the BOCH report.
"Bringing Our Children Home" guiding principles:
FOCUSING ON A CARE MODEL BASED ON PREVENTION
ESTABLISHING A FIRST NATIONS ADVOCATE FOR FAMILIES
PROTECTING CULTURAL IDENTITY
RE-LEARNING TRADITIONAL PARENTING WAYS
RESPONDING TO THE YOUTH VOICE
PROMOTING FIRST NATIONS SOLUTIONS TO KEEP CHILDREN HOME
TRANSITIONING TO A FIRST NATIONS SYSTEM FOR CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES
REVITALIZING ORIGINAL SYSTEMS OF LIFE-LONG SUPPORTS
FOCUSING ON FIRST NATIONS SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH
REVOLUTIONIZING JUSTICE SYSTEM PRACTICES
I intend to donate to The First Nations Family Advocate Office through funds raised from this and future Family Protection articles. I will continue to research and find more independent agencies for child welfare (outside of the governments CPS) and raise money to support them as well.
By sharing information on organizations such as FNFAO I hope to support them in their efforts to bring families together and heal. The abuses by the government need to stop, and I believe agencies such as FNFAO have what it takes to turn the system around.
I will continue to raise my voice for #FamilyProtection and expose the atrocities that families are facing and have faced in the cultural genocide of our First Nations Communities of Canada.
Thank you for reading and supporting the #FamilyProtection initiative.
