The picture of Winston Churchill (1941) is considered one of the most famous pictures of the great British leader, who even appears on the £ 5 bill. : His head tilted forward angrily and he stood in a nervous and impatient posture, this posturing perpetuated Churchill as a serious leader fighting uncompromisingly against the German army during World War II.

But not many people know that this was not just a propaganda pose. Churchill was really angry with the cameraman because he just stole his cigar from his mouth.

The picture is taken by the Canadian photographer of Armenian origin, Yusuf Karsh, who is considered one of the greatest portrait photographers of all time. Karsh, who in those days was a young and ambitious photographer, got two minutes to photograph Churchill during his visit to the Canadian Parliament. Churchill, who was an avid cigar and alcohol lover, entered the room with a glass of brandy in his hand and a cigar in his mouth. Apparently, no one bothered to tell him about the photographs, so he reluctantly agreed to be photographed when Karsh asked him to stop for only two minutes.

First, Karsh asked Churchill politely to put the brandy on the table. Churchill obeyed, but his expression became angrier. But Karsh was not yet satisfied. He realized that he could not photograph Churchill with a cigar in his mouth because the smoke only disturbed photography. Karsh left the camera, handed Churchill an ashtray, and asked him to put the cigar there. It was already too much: Churchill had refused and only frowns more.

Karsh pretended to give in, but in a moment's decision he snatched Churchill's cigar from his mouth and managed to photograph Churchill frozen in anger. Churchill said in response to the insolent photographer: "You can even make a roaring lion stand for a moment quietly for a picture," which was called the roaring lion.
