The “Rainbow Mountains” of Zhangye, China, look almost supernatural but the swirling orange, brown and yellow hues are actually the result of hundreds of years’ worth of sandstone and mineral deposits, which have eroded into these kaleidoscopic layers.

No wonder it’s one of the most popular spots in China for photographers.
