Gerhana bulan total kali ini terjadi karena bulan berada pada titik Apogee, atau titik terjauh dari Bumi. Gerhana bulan total ini juga bisa disebut sebagai Micromoon karena penampakannya yang kecil, kebalikan dari gerhana bulan total yang terjadi pada Januari lalu yang memiliki sebutan Super Blue Blood Moon di mana ukuran bulan terlihat lebih besar dan cerah.
Puncak dari gerhana bulan total ini sedikit lebih lama ketimbang gerhana bulan total biasa, yakni terjadi di pukul 03.23 WIB. Hal ini wajar karena memang kondisi Bulan sedang di titik paling jauh dari Bumi. Jarak Bulan dan Bumi yang menyebabkan terjadinya gerhana bulan total Micro Blood Moon ini sejauh 406.223 kilometer.
