The Spider and the Centipede

Consider the structure of a spider. A central body supported on 8 legs. The size of the body can vary as can the legs but the overall structure remains the same.

A centipede is made up of many body segments with each being supported by a pair of legs. These legs all work unison to propel the centipede along.

If both of these creatures were systems of economy, what would they be?

A spider more closely represents a monopolistic form of economy with several large companies producing goods and services and holding up the whole system by themselves.

A centipede would be the opposite form of an economy, a polyopololistic system. A polyopoly consists of many smaller businesses competing in a free and open market to drive the economy along.

If a spider lost one of its legs (ie. A business went bankrupt) the loss would be felt more than if the centipede lost one. Sure, the other legs would take on the responsibilities of their missing companion but now each remaining company has a greater strain to maintain the economic system.

If a centipede lost one of its legs, the overall effect would be minimal as the remaining legs would spread the burden amongst their many selves and the whole system would not be unduly hurt by the loss.

With these two examples in mind I would like to explain my goals with this site.

I would like to see the economy move toward a more of a polyopoly kind of setup where there are far more individual businesses and less titans.

I propose to do this by

  1. Presenting all the information I can on the multitude of ways a person can start their own business.

  2. Providing pertinent tools toward that same goal.

  3. Presenting examples of individuals who have made the leap and chiseled out their niche in the world.

With these examples and information I hope I can help grow many more legs on our economy and to help many more people become Affluent Entrepreneurs.
