EU Study Proves Piracy Doesn't Affect Sales

The entertainment industry is hell-bent on forcing the rhetoric down people's throats that piracy is ruining their industry.

They do this, despite the fact that more people download music legitimately every year, box office sales and profits worldwide keep going up, and studies reveal that piracy itself helps to drive sales by acting as a form of advertising. Game of Thrones' producers, at least, have previously admitted that being the "most pirated show of the year was "better than winning an Emmy".

Now an EU-commissioned study that was purposefully swept under the carpet has revealed that piracy does not negatively affect sales.

In fact, when it comes to the gaming industry piracy has actually been shown to increase profits for publishers.

When will the entertainment industry finally admit that it is their greed (which forces the Netflix catalog to differ from nation to nation, for instance) that makes people turn to piracy?

People simply can't afford to shell out cash for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Go - and all the other on-demand services -
which when combined greatly water down what is available to people on any one of the platforms.

Consumers want choice, and when the things they want to see aren't available on their platform AND the titles that are available on those platforms shrink (or have already been consumed) it is inevitable that people will turn to piracy.

Streaming services that provide content at a reasonable price are of interest to consumers, but until those services can begin to offer similar catalogs across borders people will always be tempted toward piracy.
