A Child's Idea of a Tree House

tree house.jpg

Claire used the materials on the table to create a shelter for her dinosaurs. First, she put some stones around the dinosaurs, and then covered them with leaves, pine cones, flowers and a log. She said, "I'll put a log on the top so that the house doesn't get blown away." She called it a "tree house."

Using her dinosaurs, Claire also engaged in conversations with the other children. She was protective of her own dinosaurs, and she did not want the dinosaurs to get out of their tree house.

In this experience, Claire demonstrated creativity, imagination, resourcefulness, and language development as she engaged with other children in their dramatic play.

The above anecdotal record is an example of an observation I made on the child to describe how she explored a range of materials and resources to create an object that was a product of her imagination and creativity. As a Preschool Teacher/Educator, I make observations for the following specific reasons:

  • Planning the programs or experiences
  • Gauging and knowing if the child has achieved his or her goals
  • Describing the child's interest, skills, and abilities
  • Providing parents with information about their child's learning and experiences
