Military vehicle runs over rioters in Caracas – TV footage

An armored vehicle, which appears to belong to the Venezuelan National Guard, has been filmed ramming into a crowd of rioters in Caracas. Clashes have broken out in the capital, amid an ongoing coup attempt.

Footage published on social media by several Latin American TV channels shows three armored military vehicles being confronted by a group of people on a highway in Caracas.

Some of them can be seen punching the vehicles, throwing stones and hitting cars with sticks. At one point, one of the official vehicles is seen ramming the crowd, appearing to run over several people.

It is unclear, though, if the incident resulted in any life-threatening casualties. At least one person can be seen being hit by the vehicle and another one is seemingly lying on the ground following the incident. It is also unclear, who exactly was behind the wheel of the car.

The incident occurred amid reports of clashes between rival groups of the Venezuelan National Guard in Caracas.

Earlier on Tuesday, the US-backed self-proclaimed ‘interim president’ Juan Guaido called for a decisive action against the elected government of President Nicolas Maduro, in what Caracas says is an attempt to stage an armed coup against the Venezuelan government.

VIDEOS appear to show Venezuelan military CLASH, make arrests after pro-Guaido group splits

Footage filmed from several angles shows one of the groups blocking a road with armored vehicles and stopping rival soldiers from advancing. The first group then forces the soldiers to disembark from their vehicles and detains them at gunpoint.

It was not immediately clear whether the group that gained the upper hand supported the legitimate government of Nicolas Maduro or the self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido. Soldiers who defected to Guaido were earlier spotted donning blue armbands. However, given the low quality of the videos, it’s hard to tell whether any soldiers wore such markings.

A separate video taken near La Carlota air force base, where civilians and defected soldiers backing Guaido have gathered to support the coup attempt, captured the moment when live ammunition rounds were fired in the background as people fled. Taken from a distance, the scene is quite chaotic and it’s not clear who is firing the rounds.

Bolton calls for ‘regime change’ in Venezuela soon

US national security advisor John Bolton has called for “change of the regime” in Caracas, and accused Cuba of controlling the current government of Venezuela, while backing an opposition politician’s attempt at armed coup.

Bolton called on senior officials in the government of President Nicolas Maduro to switch their support to the US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido, “if the Cubans will let them do it.”

He also disputed the media description of Tuesday’s events in Caracas as an attempted coup, arguing that it was a legitimate president giving orders to the country’s military.

This is clearly not a coup. We recognize Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

Bolton maintained there was "overwhelming public support" for Guaido in Venezuela and that Maduro is surrounded by Cuban bodyguards, calling on the head of the Venezuelan supreme court, the defense minister, and head of the presidential guard to defect to Guaido’s side.

“We don't know what the command structure is right now, other than it reports to Havana,” Bolton claimed, adding, “I hope we can have a change in the regime in Caracas soon.”

Despite US claims of overwhelming popular support for Guaido, the opposition politician failed to take control in January. Nor did he succeed in the attempt to force open the border between Colombia and Venezuela for US “humanitarian aid” in February. Since then, the Trump administration has sought to explain Maduro’s resilience by embracing the narrative that Venezuela is really under “Cuban occupation.”
