After a six-day outer space adventure that leaves them on the verge of psychological collapse, Rick and Morty go to an alien spa for a vacation. There they use a machine that removes a person's "toxins", i.e. the parts of one's personality corresponding to one's own definition of toxic. The machine extracts Rick's arrogance, abusiveness and dishonesty and Morty's cowardice and self-loathing. Rick becomes nicer and Morty's confidence soars, but the toxins survive as two sentient beings trapped in the machine. Toxic Rick manages to contact Healthy Rick, who respects Toxic Rick and Morty's right to live and agrees to merge himself and Morty with them. Instead Toxic Rick attempts to trap Healthy Rick and Morty in the machine, but in the end all four are free. Toxic Rick successfully enacts his plan B to turn the whole world toxic, except for the other Rick and Morty. Healthy Rick threatens to kill Toxic Morty, and Toxic Rick consents to merging because Rick sees his attachment to Morty as toxic. The Ricks merge and the world is detoxed, but Healthy Morty is happy the way he is. He runs away and begins a new life as a successful stockbroker until his crush, Jessica, helps Rick find him. Rick forces him to merge with his toxic self and return to normal.
Post-credit scene: A tour of a moonlight tower used in Toxic Rick's plot releases a woman that Toxic Rick and Morty inadvertently trapped inside the toxin machine. Upon release she shouts her safe word, "sea cucumber".
