Doomsday clock moved to 2.5 minutes to midnight

While it's impossible to predict the future when the world’s top scientists make a statement it's prudent to consider it. On Jan 27 2017 the doomsday clock was moved by the Chicago atomic scientists to 2.5 minutes to midnight. They cited President Trump, Vladimir Putin, global warming, as part of the reasons. The world has more nuclear weapons in the hands of more countries than ever before. China, Russia, and the USA are continuing to weaponize space. The world truly is becoming a very dangerous place even though most people don't think about it on a daily basis. Partly I assume because what can us average people really do about it ? It's worth noting that the Los Alamos atomic scientists applauded wildly when Hiroshima and Nagasaki where bombed. Not because they were glad 100,000 strangers were being killed but because their bomb that they helped create worked. To be relevant your work has to have meaning and this bombing gave the scientists valuation that their work mattered. And therein lies the problem. All the weapons in the world today represent someone’s life's work. And even though they can cause the death of 100’s of millions that was what they were built to do. The only way to make the world safe again is for the entire world to dismantle all their nuclear weapons before it's too late. Anyone who thinks assured mutual destruction makes the world a safer place is mistaken. Every weapon throughout human history has been used including atomic weapons. There no reason to think this trend won't continue. We need disarmament of the world’s nuclear weapons now.

Symbolic doomsday clock, was moved to 2.5 minutes to midnight. This is the closest to midnight it's been since 1953.

In 1963 the doomsday clock was 12 minutes to midnight. That's before the population explosion, global warming, arms races, and the weaponization of space.

In 1949 the doomsday clock was 3 minutes to midnight. With rising international tensions and so many nuclear and space weapons in the world it's no wonder the clocks being moved closer to midnight in 2017.
