THE PIONEERS

Future missionaries will be rewarded for every sermon they recite
We are their pioneers and helpers
Let them not forget us; the watchmen of the night
We who worked when all was gloom and no evidence of success
They will doubtlessly have more light than we
But we also served our Master earnestly
And proclaimed the same gospel they'll preach
An immeasurable debt they owe us each
In whose steps they'll be treading
Like Abel, we are still speaking
These Watchmen of the night
Who served God out of the spotlight
We who carried the torch of Truth in our generation amid tears and laughter
Defied darkness and handed the baton over to those coming after
Then comes the morning and these successors line up for duty
The greatness of responsibility will weigh on them heavily
They cannot fail or suffer our sweat to be thus satisfied
Many will gloat over our mistakes shortcoming and thirst
But we want them to know we did our best
We tried
