The Greatest Showman tells the "true" story of P. T. Barnum, a man who had nothing and achieved everything, chasing after his dreams and becoming one of the most famous entertainers of all time.

One year after La La La Land, another musical, The Greatest Showman, hits the cinemas. The message is more or less the same: Live your dreams, even if you might have to leave behind what you love. But where La La La Land tended to put more emphasis on class, The Greatest Showman is full of kitsch, pathos and Hollywood romance. The film has an incredibly high narrative speed and also likes to skip some intermediate plots that would have stretched the film unnecessarily and concentrate on the essentials. It is incredibly energetic, which is reflected in the numerous songs. These are all pop and pompous, even if they don't really fit into the 18th century. Especially since there are one or two songs that don't hit the ears immediately. But this is always made up for by the fantastic choreographies, which are really impressive. One must also praise the cast around Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron. Especially Efron is really on the move and has left his Disney-Star times behind with bravura, although some scenes in the film could have been taken directly from High School Musical. Further praise must also be given to Zendaya, another actress from the Disney portfolio, who delivers an unbelievably good performance.

In the end, the film is then ailing with its immature supporting characters and the plot, which is still too smoothly ironed. You always know what's going to happen next and despite some drama, it never gets exciting. The Greatest Showman is a shallow feel-good movie and it gives the audience exactly that feeling. It wouldn't have needed all the weary kitsch and the many clichés and maybe it would have made the movie even better.

Not a musical milestone, but a really beautiful film for the heart, which offers a pompous Hollywood spectacle on the big screen.

The Greatest Showman erzählt die wahre Geschichte von P.T. Barnum, einem Mann, der nichts hatte und alles erreichte, in dem er stets seinen Träumen hinterherjagte und so zu einem der berühmtesten Entertainer aller Zeiten wurde.

Ein Jahr nach La La Land landet mit The Greatest Showman erneut ein Musical in den Kinos. Die Message ist sogar mehr oder weniger die gleiche: Lebe deine Träume, auch wenn du dafür vielleicht zurück lassen musst, was du liebst. Wo La La Land aber eher auf Klasse setzte, fährt The Greatest Showman die volle Ladung Kitsch, Pathos und Hollywood-Romantik auf. Der Film besitzt ein unglaublich hohes Erzähltempo und überspringt auch gerne mal einige Zwischenplots, die ihn nur unnötig gestreckt hätten und konzentriert sich auf das Wesentliche. Er ist unheimlich energiegeladen, was sich letztendlich in den zahlreichen Songs niederschlägt. Diese sind allesamt der poppig und pompös, wenn sie auch irgendwie nicht ganz in die Zeit des 18. Jahrhunderts passen wollen. Zumal gibt es einen oder zwei Songs, die nicht sofort ins Ohr gehen. Dies wird aber dann stets durch die fantastischen Choreographien wett gemacht, die sich wirklich sehen lassen können und mitreißen. Da muss man auch den Cast um Hugh Jackman und Zac Efron loben. Vor allem letzterer macht sich wirklich und hat seine Disney-Star-Zeiten mit Bravur hinter sich gelassen, wenn auch einige Szenen im Film direkt aus High School Musical stammen könnten. Ein weiteres Lob muss man zudem Zendaya aussprechen, eine weitere Darstellerin aus dem Disney-Portfolio, die hier eine unglaublich gute Performance abliefert.

Letztendlich kränkelt der Film dann an seinen unausgereiften Nebenfiguren und der doch zu glatt gebügelten Handlung. Man weiß stets was als nächstes passiert und trotz einiger Dramatik wird es nie spannend. The Greatest Showman ist ein seichter Feel-Good-Film und das Gefühl gibt er dem Zuschauer auch. Dabei hätte er den ganzen überdrüssigen Kitsch und die vielen Klischees gar nicht nötig gehabt und vielleicht hätte es den Film sogar besser gemacht.

Kein Musical-Meilenstein, aber ein wirklich schöner Film fürs Herz, der vor allem auf der großen Leinwand ein pompöses Hollywood-Spektakel bietet.
