Es braucht Zeit und Geduld, um die besondere Schönheit von Tanger wahrzunehmen. Die afrikanische Stadt an der Meerenge von Gibraltar hat keine bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten und nicht die glänzende Schönheit der Städte, die Touristen auf Rundreisen anziehen. Tanger ist eine Kategorie für sich.
It takes time and patience to appreciate the special beauty of Tangier. The African city on the Strait of Gibraltar has no famous sights and does not have the brilliant beauty of the cities that attract tourists on round trips. Tangier is a category in itself.
Es ist eher mediterran als marokkanisch. Lange Zeiten war Tanger eine im besten Sinne multikulturelle Stadt des Handels und der Diplomatie. Als es in den 60er und 70er Jahren wirtschaftlich bergab ging, wurde es zum Zentrum für amerikanische und europäische Dichter der Popkultur ( Jack Kerouac,Truman Capote u.a.). Im Moment scheint es wieder eine positive Entwicklung zu geben. Der Hafen wird massiv ausgebaut, aber das Stadtbild zeigt noch viele Zeichen der Stagnation.
It is more Mediterranean than Moroccan. For a long time Tangier was a multicultural city of trade and diplomacy in the best sense of the word. When the economy went downhill in the 60's and 70's, it became a center for American and European poets of pop culture (Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote and others). At the moment there seems to be a positive development again. The port is being massively expanded, but the cityscape still shows many signs of stagnation.

But it is still popular as a place to live for people who appreciate the special atmosphere of the city. The apartments in the old Kasbah are probably the most expensive properties in the whole area. Keith Richard and other celebrities have lived here.
Von der Corniche Merkala und natürlich von vielen Dachterrassen sieht man die spanische Küste. Viele Flüchtlinge würden alles riskieren, um diese Meerenge zu überqueren und nach Europa zu gelangen. Aber die Hotspots liegen eher rund um die spanische Enklave Ceuta.
From the Corniche Merkala and of course from many roof terraces, one sees the Spanish coast. Many refugees would risk everything to cross this strait and reach Europe. But the hotspots are rather around the Spanish enclave Ceuta.
Es gibt sehr gute Restaurants, schöne Cafés, beide oft mit noch schöneren Dachterrassen, wenig Ramsch für Touristen, dafür aber in der Medina unendlich viele kleine Läden und eine sehr lebendige Musikszene, die die internationalen Wurzeln der Kultur widerspiegelt. An Eingang zur Kasbah spielen jeden Abend in einer kleinen Teestube die ‚FILS DU DÉTROIT’ eine Mischung aus Jazz und der lokalen traditionellen Musik.
Diese Stadt ist im Kern multikulturell, weltoffen und tolerant. Was will man mehr? Ich bin tagelang mit der Kamera durch die Gassen gelaufen. Wie gesagt, Tanger ist eine Stadt, die sich erst langsam erschließt. Sie hat Charakter und fällt einem nicht gleich um den Hals.

There are very good restaurants, nice cafés, both often with even more beautiful roof terraces, little junk for tourists, but instead there are endless small shops in the medina and a very lively music scene that reflects the international roots of the culture. At the entrance to the Kasbah, the 'FILS DU DÉTROIT' play a mixture of jazz and local traditional music in a small tea room every evening.
This city is essentially multicultural, cosmopolitan and tolerant. What more could you want? I walked through the alleys with my camera for days. As I said, Tangier is a city that is only slowly opening up. It has character and doesn't just welcome everybody.
I had a small apartment in the medina with access to the roof terrace.
Die flachen Dächer sind einfach ein Teil der Wohnung. Hier weht eine frische Prise vom Atlantik und man entkommt im Sommer der Hitze in den kleinen Wohnungen. Mit etwas Schutz vor Wind und Sonne kann man sich hier tagsüber den größten Teil des Jahres aufhalten. Die alten, mehrstöckigen Häuser in der Medina nutzen den engen Raum optimal aus. Das bedeutet halsbrecherische Wendeltreppen und trickreich nachträglich integrierte sanitäre Anlagen. Meist sind sie in den wunderschönen traditionellen Farben und der traditionellen Takelakt-Technik ausgeführt: Blau in allen Schattierungen, Orange, ein dunkles Rot und Ocker.
Katzen gehören zum Straßenbild. Ich habe keine gesehen, die ungepflegt oder abgemagert war. Sie haben wohl menschliche Fürsorger.
The flat roofs are simply a part of the apartment. Here a fresh breeze blows in from the Atlantic and in summer you escape the heat in the small apartments. With some protection from wind and sun, you can stay here during the day for most of the year. The old, multi-storey houses in the medina make optimal use of the narrow space. This means breakneck spiral staircases and cleverly retrofitted sanitary facilities. Most of them are executed in the beautiful traditional colours and the traditional Takelakt-technique: Blue in all shades, orange, a dark red and ochre.
Cats are part of the street scene. I have not seen any that were unkempt or emaciated. They probably have human caretakers.
