Lou Ottens war so jemand.Er war kein musikalisches Genie, aber trotzdem hat er die Art, wie wir Musik anhören, mit einem Schlag verändert.
Lou Ottens was one of them, he wasn't a musical genius, but he still changed the way we listen to music in an instant.
Denn Lou Ottens war der Mann, der die Compact Cassette (in deutsch auch oft Musikkassette genannt) erfunden hat. Nachdem er 1960 in der Entwicklungsabteilung bei Philips in Eindhoven angestellt wurde, entwickelte er in kurzer Zeit ein neues Medium auf Basis des Magnetbandes, das die Bedienung und die Größe bisheriger Tonbänder erheblich verbesserte. Diese sogenannte Compact Cassette wurde schon 1963 auf der Funkausstellung in Berlin der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.
Because Lou Ottens was the man who invented the compact cassette (also often called music cassette in German). After he was employed in the development department at Philips in Eindhoven in 1960, he quickly developed a new medium based on magnetic tape, which significantly improved the operation and size of previous tapes. This so-called compact cassette was presented to the public as soon as 1963 at the radio exhibition in Berlin.
Dieses System ermöglichte sowohl die Zusammenstellung beliebiger Musikstücke - was man heute "Playlist" nennt - bei gleichzeitiger Mobilität, und das zu einigermaßen günstigem Preis.
Man schätzt das bisher ca. 100 Milliarden Cassetten verkauft worden sind, und es gibt sie trotz MP3 und CD immer noch.
This system made it possible to put together any number of pieces of music - what is now known as a "playlist" - with simultaneous mobility and at a reasonably low price.
It is estimated that around 100 billion cassettes have been sold so far, and they are still around despite MP3 and CD.
So ist denn vor einigen Tagen dieser Mann der die Musikwelt bewegte, im Alter von 94 Jahren gestorben. Leider wird sich kaum jemand an ihn erinnern, weil ihn kaum jemand kannte.
Um so mehr will ich ihm an dieser Stelle für sein Schaffen danken. So manches Rumgeknutsche und so manche Autonummer wäre ohne seine Erfindung nicht dasselbe gewesen. Danke, Lou!
So a few days ago this man who moved the music world died at the age of 94. Unfortunately, hardly anyone will remember him because hardly anyone knew him.
