Your data matters - make sure you know your rights EU citizens

There are less than 100 days to go before GDPR become enforceable in EU. This piece of legislation is designed to address some of the failings across the EU surrounding how companies use your data (this includes the UK - The ICO has said that they will mirror this after Brexit).

I thought it might be a good idea to share some of these with my fellow Steemit users as it might help those that are not certain about their rights especially with the change coming in May, the 25th to be precise.

After the May 25th deadline this year, companies will have to ensure that if they want to market to you using your email, telephone (including mobile) or by post that they seek your permission before doing so. This is called consent. This consent must be clearly outlined ahead of the marketing and use clear, plain language that is easy to understand. They will not be allowed to obscure this in pages of t's & c's and must not use pre-ticked boxes or any other type of default consent.

There are other ways that companies and organisations, including public bodies and non-profit ones, can comply with this new regulation (legitimate interest and contract being two) but consent will have the largest impact on the average consumer. This legislation applies to all companies that hold, process or uses any identifiable data on any EU citizen regardless of where the company is based.

Read up on this and make sure you know your rights. You should be able to tell if someone is breaking the law and respond accordingly. The links below have more information on this topic and more information is coming out all the time. Your country should have their own equivalent of the ICO, apologies if it is a bit anglocentric.

Feel free to reach out if you want to know more, not an expert by any means but might know someone or somewhere that can help :-)
