Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

Today crypto- and blockchain-enthusiasts everywhere are partying--the eighth anniversary of the first actually documented real-world transaction using bitcoin.

Eight years ago today, back when no mainstream retailer accepted Bitcoin, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. At the time, the bitcoin spent was worth $41.00. Today, it would be worth more than $84 million.

Pizza Day is a day that marks just how far and how quickly the crypto asset space has developed. Since that first transaction eight years ago, digital currencies have become accepted across a wide variety of mainstream outlets.

Pizza Day is a day to reflect on how far we’ve come, how digital assets have moved from tiny niche to mainstream, and to celebrate the work of the community on getting this far. But, it’s also a reminder that the world of crypto continues to move at pace, and that our most exciting and significant work will be ahead of us.
