Movie Review - Vikram Vedha (2017)

Hello Steemians,

I hope you all are doing OK, And as you can tell I am still breathing. Although the office did try really hard this time to kill me. And I being the manager, Managed to steal a few hours from my already short personal life to enjoy a Movie. And this movie delivered.

Very rarely we come across a movie where the storytelling and how the story is told is the highlight, It is an art to describe a very common looking thing in details and to capture it in the story. There have been cases where epic stories have bitten dust take an example of "Waterworld". The movie has potential but missed to capture the magic. On the other take ''My dinner with Andre" it is mundane but captive. But that's not what we are here to discuss. This was a really entertaining movie and relies very heavily on the philosophy rather than the action. Its a simple story of Cop and Criminal. And the Movie we are talking about is 2017 Tamil Action thriller movie "Vikram Vedha"

SPOILER ALERT: This is an awesome movie and I did my best to stay positive even though there are moments that I found ridiculous I stayed with it and ended up enjoying the movie. As for the review I avoided discussing the movie plot because It would spoil the fun.

The movie draws inspiration from old Indian folklore and incorporates that with the modern society. The folklore is about the King "Vikramaditya" and the ghoul "Vetala", who are bound to fight one another and every time Vikrama has captured Vetala, Vetala will tell him a story with a twisted moral and put Vikrama in dilemma. And escapes. That is the premise of the folklore, but how do you adapt it to a modern day society. Well, the movie Vikram Vedha did exactly that. With two central characters, Vikram a cop played by R Madhavan and Vedha (A criminal parallel to Vedha) played by Vijay Sethupathi. The Vikram, A cop who is willing to go to any lengths get the bad guys and is OK with innocent dying as collateral and Vedha, A criminal boss who has his own reasoning for what he does. And that's the movie how these two clashes and who comes out victorious.

The amazing part of the entire movie is the storytelling with each encounter between the Vikram and Vedha a new twist unravels (much like the folklore) and each subplot has a direct connection to the end results. Most of the time it is just reverse engineering to the point which leads to the current stand-off.

I had issues with the character development, The portrayal of the cop was good but I think a little more background would have given the character a great depth. I mean of course he is a bad-ass cop but what drove him to that point some backstory or something of flashback would have sufficed to me he came off like a cop who just want to shot criminals. Vedha was done well, And I mean so well that most of the time he steals the spotlight. One can see the details of the character throughout the movie on how he came to be the crime boss. So many stories connected and focused on him the Vikram's character felt pale in comparison. Both the actors did a wonderful Job in conveying the emotions to the audience.

As you have seen the Musical score is awesome and just puts the weight in right place.

I wish I had written more but I wanted to avoid going through the crucial movie plot point. There were some issues, well not issues but more like nitpicks. If you could bypass that then It is a 100% all round entertainment.
