For this past week’s Twitch stream, we worked on making batts — these are flat “pillows” of fiber prepared for spinning into yarn and made on a drumcarder. Drumcarding my alpaca fleece allows me to easily blend it with other fibers. For this project, I dyed a 50/50 blend of Merino sheep wool and silk with two different blue dyes. I then blended that with alpaca from our herd member Silverton, who has beautiful fleece that ranges from gray to silver to black. The result: “Silverton’s Blue Lagoon”, a 50/25/25 blend of alpaca/Merino/silk with a blue-gray sheen. I’m spinning some for a sample now and it looks and feels great. These are going to be listed in the shop at the end of the week!
