Warm greetings to all nature lovers. Today I want to share some photos of this beautiful insect and learn a little about its nature. Recently, in the mornings, a “cigarrón” has been visiting us in our backyard; which is what we call this insect in my country, Venezuela. I’ve known about it since I was little, and I’ve always been afraid of it—or rather, I’ve always had a healthy respect for it. When I hear its buzzing, I move away from the noise and try to stay clear of this creature, even though it has never stung me. But its size and the noise it makes lead me to believe it’s dangerous, and its abilities to scare off predators are quite effective. Honestly, I hadn’t been interested before in observing or learning about this insect, but this time it landed on the ground so calmly that I felt like getting closer. They make a loud sound, which, to me, is the main thing that scares other living creatures away. Legs and body: It has many legs—six in total—that resemble those of arachnids: two legs near its head, two in the middle, and two at the rear. Both its legs and body are covered in many hairs that look velvety to the eye. Estas hacen un sonido fuerte que para mí es lo primero que ahuyenta a los demás seres vivos. > Patas y cuerpo: tiene muchas patas, en total 6 que asemejan los insectos arácnidos, dos patas ubicadas cerca de su cabeza, dos en la zona central y dos al final. They are solitary pollinators; they’re never seen in groups. They have simple families or social groups consisting of mothers and daughters—only these two can share a nest—and when they do, they divide up household chores 😄: some forage for food, others lay eggs, and still others keep watch. They play a vital ecological role, as they are the sole pollinators of certain plants, including passionflower. Another interesting fact is that they don’t eat wood—they simply excavate it and remove the debris. But what’s most surprising is that they don’t produce honey 😲; they neither make nor store it like other bees. Of course, I followed it and continued taking photos. In these photos, you can see its actual size, and although it’s one of the largest insects in the animal kingdom—and, as far as bees go, I think it’s the largest—it’s still small and can go unnoticed by many. These creatures continue to represent the microcosm that surrounds us—tiny compared to their environment. In my photos, it looks giant because, in addition to the fence that was there, I also used the zoom feature to capture the tiniest details for your enjoyment. I hope you enjoyed my post.
