There are some flavors that can transport us directly to both unpleasant and unforgettable moments or sensations. In my case, being able to relive them through the palate is something that not only takes me back to the memory but also fills me with that powerful energy I had at the moment I am remembering. Since I emigrated from Venezuela, I have discovered some products native to there that transport me back in time, however, there was still one that I couldn't find here. That's why when on a walk with my son I saw a can of Frescolita in the fridge, my face lit up in such a way that I looked like a 5-year-old girl waiting at a birthday party table to be served some of that particular red-colored soda flavor.

At some point, I heard that Frescolita was a flavor invented in Venezuela, and whether it is true or not, I have really not seen it in any of the other countries I have visited in my life, so having the opportunity for my son to try it for the first time filled me with extra emotion. It was giving him a taste of my childhood memories, beyond what I could describe to him.

We entered the store and I ordered two Frescolitas and two cachitos, which although I sometimes make at home, it's not the same when you eat them out. In some way, I felt like I was at the corner bakery of the Portuguese man, having breakfast with a buddy. That's where the memories took me. We were about to eat, but before anything, I wanted to record his reaction to trying Frescolita for the first time in his life... his response was... I've had better! when the reality is that he doesn't drink sodas often.. hahaha.

I took the opportunity to talk to the staff, who are also Venezuelans, about other products from my country they offer, just to have information on availability and prices. At the end of the day, for me, more than a culinary experience, it was an excellent way to plant emotional memories in my son's mind, who although he had "tasted better", took it all in, taking the can home as a memento of that outing and his first time drinking Frescolita.

En mi caso, poder revivirlos a través del paladar, es algo que no solo me lleva al recuerdo, sino que me llena de esa energía poderosa que tenía en el momento que estoy recordando. Desde que emigré de Venezuela, he descubierto algunos productos oriundos de allá que me devuelven en el tiempo, sin embargo, todavía había uno que no encontraba aquí. Por eso, cuando en un paseo con mi hijo vi en la heladera una lata de frescolita, mi cara se iluminó de tal manera, que parecía una niña de 5 años esperando en la mesa de un cumpleaños a que le sirvieran un poco de ese particular sabor de refresco (gaseosa) de color rojo.

En algún momento escuché que la Frescolita era un sabor inventado en Venezuela, y sea cierto o no, realmente no lo he visto en ninguno de los otros países que he visitado en mi vida, por lo que tener la posibilidad de que mi hijo lo probara por primera vez me llenó de una emoción extra. Era regalarle a él parte de mis recuerdos de infancia, más allá de lo que yo pudiera relatarle.

Entramos al local y pedí dos frescolitas y dos cachitos, que aunque a veces se los hago en casa, no es lo mismo cuando lo comes fuera. De algún modo, sentí que estaba en la panadería del portugués de la esquina, desayunando con un pana. Hasta allá me llevaron los recuerdos. Nos dispusimos a comer, pero antes que nada, quise grabar su reacción al probar la frescolita por primera vez en su vida... su respuesta fue... he probado mejores! cuando la realidad es que él no toma gaseosas con frecuencia.. jajaja.

Aproveché para conversar con los encargados, quienes son también venezolanos, sobre otros productos de mi país que ofrecen, solo por tener información en cuanto a disponibilidad y precios. Al final del día, para mi, más que una experiencia culinaria, fue una excelente manera de sembrar recuerdos emotivos en la mente de mi hijo, quien aunque había "probado mejores", se lo tomó todo, llevándose la lata para nuestra casa, como recuerdo de esa salida y de su primera vez tomando frescolita.
