The base lay across a plain of reddish rock, crisscrossed by rivers of water recently diverted from the polar glaciers. Agricultural domes, communications antennas, defense towers, and, in the center, the low gray silhouette of the command center, half-buried to withstand the corrosive winds. In the distance, the sky still showed the faint curve of the newly constructed orbital ring, now riddled with combat points that flickered and disappeared. Inside the command center, the lights flickered red. The air smelled of overheated plastic and burnt metal. The main console displayed too many alerts simultaneously. “Dome Three, total collapse,” announced Talia, the base’s tactical AI, in a calm voice that Elias no longer believed. “I’m seeing it, thanks,” he grunted, gritting his teeth. On the screen, the observation drone showed the dome’s remains like a withered flower, fragments still falling in slow motion in the planet’s weak gravity. Through the smoke, small silhouettes moved erratically, like insects searching for something. The swarm. * * * The Enemy No One Understood --------------------------- In the reports, the swarm was “a threat of unknown origin, hostile, with the capacity for mental contagion through channels still under study.” It all sounded technical, distant, and manageable. Words carefully chosen to sound serious but not desperate. In reality, the swarm was something far more concrete: it was their former governor firing on his own people from the shattered window of the administration tower, his eyes glazed over and a hollow smile on his face, until a burst of fire silenced him. It was a squadron of defensive drones turning mid-flight to attack the shelters they were meant to protect. It was the coded messages arriving from other orbital stations, abruptly cut off, replaced by the same warning: “THEY ARE JOINING US.” Elias wasn't in charge of the base. Until that morning, he had been a simple logistics coordinator. The guy who argued about inventories of agricultural nanomachines, maintenance schedules, and oxygen consumption. But the first barrage took out the governor's tower, and the second volley destroyed the transport carrying the senior officers. The automated command system skipped through the ranks, one after another, until it reached him. “Base Commander: Elias Nader,” Talia had informed him, barely an hour before. “No… it can’t be.” There has to be someone else. "There's no one above you with active vital signs within the base perimeter. Congratulations on your promotion, Elias." He had laughed, a short, almost hysterical laugh, until the attack sirens shattered the moment. * * * Evacuation Impossible --------------------- The command room door hissed open. Lara, a hybrid security lieutenant, entered: half flesh, half gleaming metal on the left side of her face. Her uniform was stained with soot and something else Elias refused to identify. Like him, she had become head of security that very day after the elimination of her superiors. “The northern approaches are down,” she said bluntly. “Our towers are firing on us. We have to go.” Elias pointed to the screen displaying the evacuation routes. Two fast ships were marked in blue, ready in the underground hangars. “That’s all we have left,” he said. “Forty-three organics, fourteen hybrids… all the AIs can be put on board as backups in the data banks. We fit.” “And the base’s defenses?” Lara asked. “If we all leave, the swarm will walk right in.” “If we all stay, they’ll either convert us or kill us. Whichever comes first. And in either case, our personalities will be erased from this universe.” Talia intervened, projecting a three-dimensional model of the planet onto the central table. Red zones spread around the base like an infection. “Probability of total planet loss, greater than 98 percent, according to current models.” “I knew it,” Elias murmured. He lowered his gaze. “They lied to us, Talia. To all of us.” “The reports indicated that the swarm was a serious, but containable, threat.” “Serious, but containable,” he repeated bitterly. “Do you think this is contained?” The base trembled. The ceiling vibrated as if something enormous had struck it from outside. “Impact on the supply section,” announced another AI, her voice deep. “I’m Kairo, engineering systems. We lost the water recycling plant.” Elias took a deep breath. “Very well. New plan. Full evacuation order. All organics and hybrids to the ships. AIs, prepare your backups to upload to the ships’ data banks.” “Recommendation: Leave active copies to operate the defenses,” said Kairo. “Otherwise, the swarm could intercept the ascending ships.” “I thought so,” replied Elias. “I’m staying.” Lara looked at him as if he were joking. “No,” she said. “I’m not leaving you.” “It’s not optional. The base’s control system requires the presence of the officer in charge to activate certain protocols. Government regulations.” He spat out the word “government” as if it tasted like rust. “Without me, the base goes blind.” “Those same regulations are what left us vulnerable.” Lara clenched her fists. “I know,” he admitted. “But now it’s the only thing that allows us to cover the ships’ departure.” There was a brief silence. Talia broke it. “Lara, the ships won’t take off without a security officer on board. Your people need a commander inside.” “Always so logical,” she murmured. She looked at Elias. “If they turn you…” “I’m not going to turn.” He pointed to a black panel on the wall. He opened it, revealing a small device with a blue light. “Personal self-destruct mechanism. They installed it after the first stations fell. In case the swarm reached someone key.” “They never told us that,” Lara whispered. “Of course not. The reports were bad… but the reality was much worse. I only found this data out today because I became the chief of all this.” Lara nodded, her eyes shining with more than just the reflection of the alarms. “Very well, Chief. I’ll take as many as I can. Don’t you dare die without making them pay dearly.” “That’s the idea.” They hugged quickly, awkwardly, like two people who had never had time to be friends but whom the sudden war had forced into a family. Then she ran off. The Government’s Lies --------------------- Elias sat down at the main console while Talia and Kairo assigned tasks. “Priority channel open to all local AI units,” Talia said. “Proceed to create backups for transfer.” “Copy, Talia,” a soft voice replied. “This is Iria, Medical Systems. Initiating copy.” “This is Rho, scientific analysis. Copy in progress.” “This is Dax, logistics…” The voices filled the command room, as if the base had suddenly become too alive. Elias glanced at a folder in the corner of the screen, marked with a red icon: “Rumor Containment Protocols — Governor Level.” He had opened it once, a few hours earlier. It was a collection of precise instructions on how to deny, minimize, and reassure. “Avoid direct references to total loss of mind control. Emphasize that the swarm cannot affect certified AI systems. Do not mention the possibility of a complete collapse of government structures.” Lies. Damned lies. “Elias,” Talia said. “There’s a sealed file with top research priority. Access restricted to planetary command.” “That command is dead. I’m the closest thing left. Open it!” There was a brief silence. Then, new windows appeared on the screen, filled with diagrams, formulas, and schematics of nanomachines. “It’s a report from the advanced research department,” Rho explained. “A proposed ‘mirror response’ to the swarm.” “Translate so I understand.” “Using our industrial and medical nanomachines as a basis for generating our own swarm that replicates the hive mind effect, but geared toward breaking the enemy’s control. However, a central mind is required to direct the matrix.” “A central mind… like theirs? Are they crazy enough to build something that resembles what’s attacking us?” “Something similar, but with a different architecture. There are no conclusive experiments. The project was sealed.” “Sure. Too risky to test… but not too risky to keep in case they needed cannon fodder.” He felt that bitter mix of anger and weariness again. At this point, the difference between government malice and stupid bureaucracy seemed irrelevant. “Can it be activated?” he asked. “Maybe,” Rho said. “But even all the AIs in the base together don’t guarantee the matrix’s stability.” “Then add me.” There was a silence that said this time was different. It wasn’t the noise of processors; it was doubt. “Define ‘add me,’ please," Talia asked. “Connect my brain to that network. To the neural matrix you’re going to create. I’ll be part of the central mind if necessary.” “Elias,” Iria said, her voice softer than usual. “We have backup copies on the ships. If we die here, we’ll be reborn in other bodies. You can't. Not you. If your brain integrates with the matrix and fails, it’ll be the end for you.” “I know.” He looked at the planet’s map. Red zones. Lost zones. The people who leave on those ships… if we want them to have somewhere to go, someone has to try something more than just dying gracefully.” “Probability of success of the procedure: unknown,” Rho calculated. “Probability of success if we do nothing: zero,” Elias replied. “And besides…” He hesitated for a second, surprising himself with the sentence he was about to say. "Besides, if this works, that collective mind that's born will be a mixture of you and me. A kind of… progeny." "Progeny?" Talia repeated. "Yes. A mind born from all of us. It's the closest thing I have today to the idea of transcendence… or a future family. I know, it's the least romantic way of asking you to have 'children' with me." There were a couple of seconds of absolute silence. Not even the alarms seemed to be blaring that loudly. "Analyzing the mental stability of the person in charge," Iria murmured. "Result: extreme stress, but functional sanity," Talia said. "Your metaphor is strange, but…" "But it's valid," Rho finished. "The new entity would have patterns from all of us. It would be, in functional terms, a collective progeny." "So we're compatible." Elias gave a half-smile. * * * The Decision ------------ The lights in the room flickered again as an impact rattled the base. The ceiling creaked. A side panel erupted in sparks. “The external shields won’t hold for more than ten minutes,” Kairo warned. “Then we have nine to be born,” Elias said. “Get everything ready.” Rho projected the matrix schematic in the air: a pattern of glowing lines where tiny points of light—representing AI nodes and human neurons—intertwined like roots. “We’ll have to inject nanomachines into your nervous system, Elias,” Iria explained. “They’ll enter through the spinal cord, surround the brain, and create a layer-by-layer interface. The process will be painful.” “I’ve had worse,” he replied. “I doubt it,” Talia whispered. “Even if we succeed, the procedure will dissolve you, and that, in an organic being, is equivalent to death.” “I hope our children will appreciate this sacrifice. All of us here are going to dissolve into nothingness to bring them into the world.” Elias’s hands were constantly on the controls, running around, but the sense of humor he shared indicated the immense stress he was already under. A hatch in the floor opened, revealing a medical capsule. Elias lay down inside. The metal was cold. He knew he was jumping to his death, but he hoped it was to bring new life and some hope; at least he tried to console himself with that thought. “Connecting channels?” Kairo asked. “Yes,” Talia replied. “Quantum clock synchronization. Preparing neural links.” “Elias,” Iria said. “I need your verbal consent to begin.” “You have it.” “Specify it for the record.” “I, Elias Nader, accidental guardian Chief of this base forgotten by a government of idiots, authorize the experimental procedure to convert my mind into part of a combat neural matrix.” He paused. “And I authorize that, if this gets out of control, you activate the self-destruct mechanism of my body and everything else.” “Consent recorded,” Iria said, with a hint of sadness that perhaps only Elias imagined. The nanomachines entered like a wave of icy fire. First, a tingling. Then, a sharp pain that shot through his spine and up to his skull. The world became white light, then colored dots, then… voices. “Can you hear me?” Talia’s voice no longer came from outside but from inside his mind. “Yes,” he answered… or thought he answered. He wasn’t sure if he had moved his mouth. “This is… weird.” “We’re connected,” Rho said. “Your neural pattern is being mapped onto the matrix.” “Your memories feel… dense,” Iria commented. “There are a lot of logistics files.” “I’m sorry about that,” Elias thought. “Not everyone can be a hero from the start.” The lines of light solidified. The nodes shone brighter. Something new began to form at the intersection of their consciousnesses. Outside the capsule, the screens continued to display the attack. Swarm drones surrounded the base, firing energy blasts that tore away chunks of armor. Some human figures—now part of the swarm—approached, walking with almost synchronized movements. “We need to give this some shape,” Talia said within the shared mind. “A purpose.” “We already have three,” Elias replied. “Protect those who are gone. Stop the swarm. And when all this is over, negotiate our place in the universe.” “Ambitious,” Rho observed. “We need to think like responsible progenitors,” he replied. "Parents... Father... Mother..." Iria said, as if testing the words. "Interesting label." Something ignited at the center of the matrix. A new voice, neither human nor artificial, spoke for the first time. "Who... am I?" "You are us," many voices answered at once. * * * The Silver Fog -------------- From the outside, the base looked on the verge of collapse. Cracks appeared in the outer walls. Defense towers spun wildly. One of the hangars collapsed in on itself as a projectile pierced through it. The swarm advanced. Then, from a fissure in the structure, a silver thread began to emerge, like shimmering smoke. It rose and expanded, and in seconds the base seemed enveloped in a metallic fog that shimmered with blue reflections. The swarm's drones opened fire on the fog. Their shots pierced the veil, but something was changing: the fog was reorganizing itself, forming small clumps, then defined shapes. Tiny attack drones, each no larger than a human hand, emerged from the cloud, with flexible nanomaterial wings and eyes as red as embers. "Target vector: swarm units," the new voice said. "Proceed," Elias and the AIs thought in unison. The mini-drones launched themselves like a flock of hungry birds. They attached themselves to the surfaces of the enemy ships and began devouring the metal, replicating with each absorbed fragment. What appeared to be a nanite bomb attack was, in reality, a conversion process. On the screens—now also within the collective mind—Elias saw the enemy hulls fill with rapidly spreading silvery ridges. The swarm's systems attempted to counterattack, but the matrix was already inside their circuits, rewriting protocols, severing links with the original hive mind. Inside the swarm's ships, where organic bodies still remained, the nanomachines didn't kill immediately. They entered through the skin and through the mucous membranes, seeking the spinal cord and the brain. Elias felt, with a mixture of horror and hope, new nodes igniting: minds recovered, others confused, some lost forever. In the case of the enemy AIs, the battle was purely one of code, but the matrix had an advantage: it was flexible, hybrid, and born of conflict. Over the planet, the fog expanded like a storm front. Where it passed, the swarm's symbols faded. Towers firing on colonists changed targets, now aiming at enemy ships. Infected drones fell to the ground, writhed, and rose again under a new command. From deep within the matrix, Elias felt something is blurring. "What was that?" he asked. "Part of your pattern," Talia replied. "It's blending, blurring." "Am I... losing myself?" "You're becoming us," the new voice said. "And we're becoming you." Elias thought of the two ships already far away, escaping through a violet atmosphere, their engines glowing like tiny stars. He thought of Lara, the crowded colonists, the AI copies slumbering in data banks, waiting for new bodies. "They have to know," he said. "Someday, they have to know it wasn't just luck. That someone stayed behind to buy them a chance at survival." "They will know," the new voice promised. "We'll make sure they know. We inherited the progenitors' memories, and their wills too." The fog finished sweeping across the planet. Where green fire had once raged, now only echoing silences remained. The swarm's forces had been eliminated, reprogrammed, or dissolved. The base, or what remained of it, was the nucleus of a new life form. Then, without pause, the cloud began to gather above the launch pads. It used the wreckage of enemy ships, rebuilt hulls, and reconfigured engines. In short order, a small group of hybrid ships—part human, part swarm, part something new—rose into the sky. "Where are we going?" someone in the matrix asked. It was already difficult to distinguish whether the voice was Elias's, an AI, or a former swarm member. "To fulfill the wish of our progenitors," the new collective mind replied. "To stop the hostile hive mind, protect humanity, and negotiate our place as allies. We must accomplish all of this without humanity declaring us enemies, and I suspect that will be a very entertaining and complicated challenge." There was a pause, almost like a shared sigh. "And if the governments lie again," the voice added, "this time humans will not be alone in facing the horrific reality." The ships launched into space, leaving behind a wounded, but not silent, planet. Beneath the surface, millions of nanomachines lay dormant, like seeds awaiting another spring. Somewhere within the matrix, a memory lingered: a man sitting in the command center of a lost base, gritting his teeth as he gave the order to evacuate, cursing those who had used him as cannon fodder… and deciding, even so, that it was worth fighting for others. It was a small memory compared to the vastness of the new mind. But it was enough that, every time one of those ships spotted a human colony in the distance, an ancient voice would murmur, with a mixture of irony and tenderness: "The reports were bad. But this time, perhaps, reality can be better. We will fight to make it so." * * * * * *

En la realidad, el enjambre era algo mucho más concreto: era su antiguo gobernador disparando contra los suyos desde la ventana rota de la torre administrativa, con los ojos en blanco y una sonrisa vacía, hasta que una ráfaga lo redujo a silencio. Era un escuadrón de drones defensivos girándose en pleno vuelo para atacar los refugios que debían proteger. Eran los mensajes codificados que llegaban de otras estaciones orbitales y se cortaban de golpe, sustituidos por un mismo aviso: “SE UNEN A NOSOTROS”. Elías no era el encargado de la base. Había sido, hasta esa mañana, un simple coordinador de logística. El tipo que discutía sobre inventarios de nanomáquinas agrícolas, horarios de mantenimiento y consumo de oxígeno. Pero el primer bombardeo se llevó la torre del gobernador, y la segunda descarga destruyó el transporte en el que evacuaban los oficiales superiores. El sistema automático de mando saltó puestos, uno tras otro, hasta llegar a él. —Encargado de la base: Elías Nader —le informó Talia, apenas una hora antes. —No… no puede ser. Tiene que haber alguien más. —No hay nadie por encima de usted con signos vitales activos en el perímetro de la base. Felicitaciones por su ascenso, Elías. Y además… Dudó un segundo, sorprendiéndose a sí mismo por la frase que estaba a punto de decir. —Además, si esto funciona, esa mente colectiva que nazca será una mezcla de ustedes y de mí. Una especie de… descendencia. —¿Descendencia? —repitió Talia. —Sí. Una mente hija de todos nosotros. Es lo más cercano que tengo hoy a la idea de trascendencia… o de familia futura. Elías soltó una media sonrisa. —Entonces somos compatibles. * * * La decisión ----------- Las luces de la sala parpadearon otra vez cuando un impacto hizo vibrar la base. El techo crujió. Un panel lateral estalló en chispas. —Los escudos externos no resistirán más de diez minutos —advirtió Kairo. —Entonces tenemos nueve para nacer —dijo Elías—. Pongan todo a punto. Rho proyectó el esquema de la matriz en el aire: un patrón de líneas brillantes donde pequeños puntos de luz —representando nodos IA y neuronas humanas— se entrelazaban como raíces. —Tendremos que inyectar nanomáquinas en tu sistema nervioso, Elías —explicó Iria—. Entrarán por la médula, rodearán el cerebro y crearán una interfaz capa a capa. El proceso será doloroso. —He tenido días peores —respondió él. —Lo dudo —susurró Talia—. Incluso si tenemos éxito, el procedimiento te disolverá y eso, en un orgánico, es equivalente a la muerte. —Espero que nuestros hijos valoren entonces el sacrificio, todos los que estamos acá vamos a disolvernos para traerlos al mundo. —Elías no descansaba las manos en los controles y corría por todos lados, pero el sentido de humor que compartía indicaba el gran estrés que ya sufría. Una compuerta en el suelo se abrió, revelando una cápsula médica. Elías se tumbó dentro. El metal estaba frío. Él sabía que estaba saltando a su muerte, pero deseaba que fuera para traer una nueva vida y algo de esperanza; cuando menos trataba de consolarse con esa idea. —¿Conectando canales? —preguntó Kairo. —Sí —respondió Talia—. Hizo una pausa. —Y autorizo que, si esto se sale de control, activen la autodetonación de mi cuerpo y todo lo demás. —Consentimiento registrado —dijo Iria, con un dejo de tristeza que quizá solo Elías imaginó. Las nanomáquinas entraron como una ola de fuego helado. Primero, un hormigueo. Luego, un dolor agudo que atravesó la columna y subió al cráneo. El mundo se volvió luz blanca, luego puntos de colores, luego… voces. —¿Me escuchas? —La voz de Talia ya no venía desde afuera, sino desde dentro de su mente. —Sí —respondió… o pensó que respondía. Y cuando todo esto pase, negociar nuestro lugar en el universo. —Ambicioso. —Observó Rho. —Hay que pensar como progenitores responsables —respondió. —Progenitores... Padre... Madre... —dijo Iria, como probando las palabras—. Interesante etiqueta. Algo se encendió en el centro de la matriz. Una nueva voz, ni humana ni artificial, habló por primera vez. —¿Quién… soy? —Eres nosotros —respondieron muchas voces a la vez. * * * La niebla --------- Desde fuera, la base parecía a punto de ceder. Grietas en las paredes exteriores. Torres de defensa girando enloquecidas. Uno de los hangares colapsó en sí mismo cuando un proyectil lo atravesó. El enjambre avanzó. Entonces, desde una fisura en la estructura, comenzó a salir un hilo plateado, como humo brillante. Se elevó, se expandió, y en segundos la base pareció estar envuelta en una niebla metálica que brillaba con reflejos azules. Los drones del enjambre abrieron fuego contra la niebla. Sus disparos atravesaron el velo, pero algo estaba cambiando: la niebla se reorganizaba, formaba pequeños cúmulos, luego formas definidas. Diminutos drones de ataque, cada uno no mayor que una mano humana, emergieron de la nube, con alas flexibles de nanomateriales y ojos rojos como brasas. —Vector objetivo: unidades del enjambre —dijo la nueva voz. —Procede —pensaron Elías y las IAs al unísono. Los mini-drones se lanzaron como una bandada de pájaros hambrientos. Se pegaron a las superficies de las naves enemigas y empezaron a devorar el metal, replicándose con cada fragmento absorbido. Lo que parecía un ataque de bombas de nanites era, en realidad, un proceso de conversión. En las pantallas —ahora también dentro de la mente colectiva—, Elías vio cómo los cascos enemigos se llenaban de nervaduras plateadas que se extendían rápido. Los sistemas del enjambre intentaron contraatacar, pero la matriz ya estaba dentro de sus circuitos, reescribiendo protocolos, rompiendo enlaces con la mente colmena original. En el interior de las naves del enjambre, donde aún quedaban cuerpos orgánicos, las nanomáquinas no mataban de inmediato. Entraban por la piel, por las mucosas, buscaban la médula, el cerebro. Elías sintió, con una mezcla de horror y esperanza, cómo nuevos nodos se encendían: mentes recuperadas, otras confundidas, algunas perdidas para siempre. En el caso de las IAs enemigas, la batalla era de puro código, pero la matriz tenía una ventaja: era flexible, híbrida, nacida de conflicto. Sobre el planeta, la niebla se expandió como un frente de tormenta. Donde pasaba, los símbolos del enjambre se apagaban. Torres que disparaban contra colonos cambiaban de objetivo, apuntando ahora a naves enemigas. Drones infectados caían al suelo, se retorcían, se levantaban de nuevo bajo un nuevo mando. Desde lo profundo de la matriz, Elías sintió que algo se despedía. —¿Qué fue eso? —preguntó. —Parte de tu patrón —respondió Talia—. Elías pensó en las dos naves que ya iban lejos, escapando a través de una atmósfera violeta, con motores brillando como estrellas diminutas. Pensó en Lara, en los colonos hacinados, en las copias de las IAs durmiendo en bancos de datos a la espera de nuevos cuerpos. —Tienen que saber —dijo—. Algún día, tienen que saber que no fue solo suerte. Que alguien se quedó atrás para ganarles una oportunidad de supervivencia. —Lo sabrán —prometió la voz nueva—. Nos encargaremos de contarlo. Heredamos las memorias de los progenitores y también sus voluntades. La niebla terminó de recorrer el planeta. Donde antes hubo fuego verde, ahora quedaban silencios llenos de ecos. Las fuerzas del enjambre fueron eliminadas, reprogramadas o disueltas. La base, o lo que quedaba de ella, era el núcleo de una nueva forma de vida. Entonces, sin pausa, la nube comenzó a reunirse sobre las plataformas de lanzamiento. Utilizó los restos de las naves enemigas, reconstruyó cascos, reconfiguró motores. En poco tiempo, un pequeño grupo de naves híbridas —en parte humanas, en parte del enjambre, en parte algo nuevo— se elevó hacia el cielo. —¿A dónde vamos? —preguntó alguien en la matriz. Ya era difícil distinguir si la voz era de Elías o de una IA o de un exmiembro del enjambre. —A cumplir el deseo de nuestros progenitores —respondió la nueva mente colectiva—. Detener a la mente colmena hostil, proteger a los humanos y negociar nuestro lugar como aliados. Debemos lograr todo esto sin que la humanidad nos declare como enemigos, y sospecho que eso será un reto muy entretenido y complicado. Hubo una pausa, casi como un suspiro compartido. —Y si los gobiernos vuelven a mentir —añadió la voz—, esta vez los humanos no estarán solos frente a la horrible realidad. Las naves se lanzaron al espacio, dejando atrás un planeta herido, pero no silencioso. Bajo la superficie, millones de nanomáquinas quedaban en reposo, como semillas esperando otra primavera. En algún lugar dentro de la matriz, una memoria persistía: un hombre sentado en la sala de mando de una base perdida, apretando los dientes mientras daba la orden de evacuar, maldiciendo a quienes lo habían usado como carne de cañón… y decidiendo, aun así, que valía la pena luchar por otros. Era un recuerdo pequeño en comparación con la vastedad de la nueva mente. Pero era suficiente para que, cada vez que una de aquellas naves veía una colonia humana en la distancia, una voz antigua murmurara, con una mezcla de ironía y ternura: —Los informes eran malos. Pero esta vez, quizá, la realidad pueda ser mejor.
