2048 brought a breakthrough in technology. Computing power became inexhaustible and AI started managing the world, eliminating sickness, starvation, and death. Mankind had nothing to fear except the Scythes.

Prior to this novella's publication, Brooke Bolander was mostly known for incredibly angry stories. Those stories were loud and powerful and sweary. The Only Harmless Great Thing isn't loud. It simmers.
