La Habana es una urbe enorme y cosmopolita donde, si de arquitectura hablamos, predomina lo clásico ante lo moderno. Aquí no veras un defile de rascacielos, no. Los hay, pero muy pocos. No como en otras ciudades del mundo donde al alzar la vista te da mareo. >Hello, my friends from Worldmappin. Aquí no te va a doler el cuello, porque aquí los edificios no compiten con las nubes. La Habana es una ciudad que se estira en manzanas interminables y se abraza al suelo con la dignidad de quien sabe que la altura no lo es todo. La Habana tiene el alma de columnas y balcones de hierro forjado. >Here, your neck won't hurt, because the buildings here don't compete with the clouds. Havana is a city that stretches out in endless blocks and hugs the ground with the dignity of one who knows that height isn't everything. Havana has a soul of columns and wrought-iron balconies.

Los palacetes del Vedado, Habana Vieja, y Centro Habana, con sus techos altos y sus vitrales de colores, te cuentan historias de familias que soñaron con París pero se quedaron en La Habana, con más gloria que los propios franceses. Y ni hablar del Centro, con esas casonas de patios interiores donde el tiempo se detiene y hasta el calor parece más soportable. >The little palaces of Vedado, Old Havana, and Centro Habana, with their high ceilings and stained-glass windows, tell you stories of families who dreamed of Paris but stayed in Havana, with more glory than the French themselves. And don't get me started on Centro, with those mansions featuring inner courtyards where time stands still and even the heat seems more bearable.

¿Los rascacielos? Aquí los contamos con los dedos de una mano. Y es que la ciudad tiene, a mi entender, un problema, se enamoró de lo clásico. Del capitel, de la cornisa, de la moldura tirneada que no sirve para nada pero que embellece todo. Hasta en la decadencia, con las fachadas descascaradas y los balcones medio caídos, el clasicismo sigue siendo el rey. Para mí, una columna sin pintura es más bella que un bloque de cemento recién estrenado. >Skyscrapers? We can count them on one hand. The thing is, the city has, in my view, a problem: it fell in love with the classical. With the capital, the cornice, the ornate molding that serves no purpose but beautifies everything. Even in decay, with peeling facades and half-collapsed balconies, classicism remains king. To me, an unpainted column is more beautiful than a brand-new concrete block.

La modernidad llegó, sí, pero a la cubana. Se coló en algún que otro edificio funcional, en alguna esquina de Miramar o el Vedado, pero nunca ha logrado imponerse. Porque aquí el lujo no es vivir en el piso 40, sino en un bajo con terraza donde puedas ver pasar la vida, la gente, los vecinos. El rascacielos es frío, distante, anónimo. La Habana clásica es caliente y cercana. >Modernity did arrive, yes, but Cuban-style. It crept into a few functional buildings, into some corner of Miramar or Vedado, but it has never managed to impose itself. Because here, luxury isn't living on the 40th floor, but on a ground floor with a terrace where you can watch life, people, and neighbors go by. The skyscraper is cold, distant, anonymous. Classical Havana is warm and close-knit.

A continuación les muestro algunos edificios emblemáticos que me deslumbran cada vez que los veo y me transportan a épocas lejanas. Para empezar, miren esta belleza. Es la Estación Central de Ferrocarriles de Cuba. Este peculiar edificio que les muestro a continuación, cuyo nombre es Edificio Moure, por el apellido de su antiguo propietario, está en un cuchillo que forman las calles Dragones, Águila y Zanja. También es conocido como el “Edificio de la Singer”, ya que en el estuvo la sucursal de la American Sewing Machine Company, una compañía que vendía máquinas de coser marca Singer (mi mamá tuvo una) y sus accesorios. Hoy es un edificio residencial. >This peculiar building I'm showing you next, whose name is Edificio Moure—after its former owner's surname—sits on the wedge formed by Dragones, Águila, and Zanja streets, It is also known as the "Singer Building," because it once housed the branch of the American Sewing Machine Company, a company that sold Singer brand sewing machines (my mom had one) and their accessories. Este es el antiguo Palacio de Balboa, por el Marqués de Balboa. Se encuentra ubicado en la calle Ejido y ocupa toda una manzana. Posee un toque ligeramente ecléctico y jardines a la redonda. Como se ve a simple vista, la mansión de tres niveles y su fachada posee un gran reloj que ya no funciona. Hoy, este imponente inmueble es la sede de la Oficina de Seguridad de Redes Informáticas de Cuba. >This is the former Palacio de Balboa, named after the Marquis of Balboa. It's located on Ejido Street and occupies an entire block. It has a slightly eclectic touch and gardens all around. As you can plainly see, the three-level mansion and its facade feature a large clock that no longer works. Today, this imposing property serves as the headquarters of Cuba's Computer Network Security Office.

Esta edificación es la Antigua Cede de la Cruz Roja Cubana, hoy es un Policlínico, en la calle Zulueta. >This building is the former headquarters of the Cuban Red Cross, now a Polyclinic, located on Zulueta Street.

Aquí ven la majestuosidad del antiguo edificio de la Cuban Telephon Company. Ubicado en la esquina de Águila y Dragones, a la entrada del Barrio Chino, muy cerca del parque El Curita. Hoy radica allí el Museo de Las Telecomunicaciones de Cuba. >Here you see the majesty of the old Cuban Telephone Company building. Located at the corner of Águila and Dragones, at the entrance to Chinatown, very close to El Curita Park. Today, the Telecommunications Museum of Cuba is housed there.

Este es el Teatro Martí. Antiguo Teatro Ijona. Ubicado en la intersección de las calles Dragones y Zulueta, a pocos metros del Capitolio Nacional. >This is the Teatro Martí, formerly Teatro Ijona. Y este edificio de a continuación, que lo dejé para último, es el más conocido de toda Cuba y nuestra Carta de presentación al mundo. El Capitolio Nacional. Hoy es un museo y allí radica además, la Asamblea Nacional. >And this last building, which I saved for last, is the most famous in all of Cuba and our calling card to the world: the National Capitol. Today, it is a museum and also houses the National Assembly.

Cuando vengas a La Habana, no busques una ciudad que toca el cielo, busca la que toca el alma. La que tiene más columnas que ascensores y más historias que pisos. Porque en esta isla, lo nuestro es mirar de frente, no hacia arriba. Y eso, aunque suene a verso, es lo que nos hace únicos. >When you come to Havana, don't look for a city that touches the sky—look for the one that touches the soul. The one with more columns than elevators and more stories than floors. Because on this island, our way is to look straight ahead, not upward. And that, even if it sounds like a verse, is what makes us unique.
