* * * * * * (Versión en español más abajo). ------------------------------- * * * Today was one of those Sundays you wish you could recount calmly but which actually unfolds amidst power outages, leaks, cracks, and a knot in your chest that doesn't go away so easily. Even so, here I am, trying to bring humor to the day, like the man in the picture: smiling, even though sometimes you have to hold the smile on with your fingers so it doesn't fall off.

A tough Sunday -------------- This Sunday, July 12th, I had to deal with several power outages, the kind that interrupt everything and change the rhythm of the entire day. When the power goes on and off, you feel like even your thoughts get a little jumbled up, even though that's practically the daily reality in my current country. And as if that weren't enough, another problem appeared at home: a water pipe once again showed signs that something is wrong. The Cracks That Frighten ------------------------ What really shook me, without exaggeration, was discovering some small cracks in the walls of the house. Maybe someone from the outside sees them and says they're not a big deal, but when you're still carrying the memory of the double earthquake 18 days ago, those marks feel enormous. Your mind immediately jumps to the worst-case scenario (even though I'm doing my best not to think that way), and it's incredibly draining. Laughing to Keep From Crying ---------------------------- I try to take everything with the best sense of humor I can muster, because sometimes there's no other option. But yes, the truth is I'm anxious. I'm worried that these cracks, the leaks, and the other problems might end up being signs of something more serious in this old house where we live. In the end, that old saying rings true: you laugh so you don't cry. The Heaviest Thing ------------------ There's an image that I can't get out of my head: the neighbor's house collapsed during the earthquake. Since then, that scene visits me more often than I'd like to admit, and not exactly in pleasant dreams. That's why the fear isn't just about the walls; it's about what could happen if the house is truly compromised. Even if it is, we have nowhere to go, nor a steady income that would allow us to rent somewhere else to stay. What's Next ----------- Now I have to carry on as best I can: repair what can be repaired, keep an eye on the plumbing, and get an engineering assessment so someone can thoroughly check if the house held up as it should or if there's a serious problem. It's not a small decision, but it's one I can't put off any longer. In the meantime, I have to do what I always do: endure, solve problems, and keep going with a smile that's half forced, half faked, but a smile nonetheless. * * * * * *

* * * * * * Hoy fue uno de esos domingos que uno quisiera contar con calma, pero que en realidad se van armando entre apagones, goteras, grietas y un nudo en el pecho que no se quita tan fácil. Aun así, aquí sigo, tratando de ponerle humor a la jornada, como el señor de la imagen: sonriendo, aunque a veces haya que sostener la sonrisa con los dedos para que no se nos caiga.

Un domingo pesado ----------------- Este domingo, 12 de julio, me tocó lidiar con varias fallas de servicio eléctrico, de esas que interrumpen todo y le cambian el ritmo al día completo. Cuando la luz va y viene, uno siente que hasta las ideas se desordenan un poco, a pesar de que esa es casi que la realidad cotidiana en mi actual #Venezuela. Y por si fuera poco, apareció otro problema en casa: una tubería de agua volvió a dar señales de que algo no anda bien. Las grietas que asustan ----------------------- Lo que más me movió el piso, sin exagerar, fue descubrir unas pequeñas grietas en las paredes de la casa. Tal vez alguien desde afuera las vea y diga que no son gran cosa, pero cuando uno viene cargando el recuerdo del terremoto doblete de hace 18 días, esas marcas se sienten enormes. La mente enseguida se va al peor escenario (aunque hago todo el esfuerzo que puedo para no pensar así), y eso desgasta muchísimo. Reír para no llorar ------------------- Yo trato de llevar todo con el mejor humor que puedo, porque a veces no queda otra. Pero sí, la verdad es que ando angustiado. Me preocupa que estas grietas, las filtraciones y los demás problemas terminen siendo señales de algo más serio en esta casa vieja donde vivimos. Al final se cumple ese viejo refrán: uno se ríe para no llorar. Lo que más pesa --------------- Hay una imagen que no se me borra: la casa del vecino desplomada durante el terremoto. Desde entonces, esa escena me visita más seguido de lo que me gustaría admitir, y no precisamente en sueños bonitos. Por eso el miedo no es solo por las paredes; es por lo que podría pasar si la casa realmente está comprometida. Incluso si lo está, no tenemos a dónde ir, ni un salario fijo que nos permitiera alquilar en algún otro sitio para quedarnos. Lo que sigue ------------ Ahora toca seguir como se pueda: reparar lo que se pueda reparar, estar pendiente de la tubería y buscar una evaluación de ingeniería para que alguien revise bien si la casa resistió como debe o si hay un problema grave. No es una decisión pequeña, pero es una que no puedo seguir postergando.
