When one thinks of Marrakech a lot of exotic and colorful images tend to pop into our minds, thoughts that lead us to stroll among beautifully tiled palaces and intensely flavored meals. But if we think of it as a concrete destination to plan a trip, we stop doing so only with curiosity and longing. We begin to wonder what it would be like to face the reality of a country where certain customs might seem uncomfortable to some Westerners. There are hundreds of differences that we could try to dig into and I'm not sure that a simple comparative discussion can be held. But that's not the point of this post, of course I'm just talking about it because there were many things that I anticipated with concern and didn't know if I would be prepared for. The notorious *bargaining* was one of the customs of Moroccan culture that I was least excited to delve into. So much interaction to acquire a product seems unnecessary to me, besides perceiving it as an informal practice, but this thought is part of a totally different mentality from the world I was visiting and in trips like this, those differences have to be left out. For Moroccans this tradition is more than just doing business, it is an art that defines their ability to convey the value of the product they have to offer. When they start talking to you about what you are interested in and they hold it in their hands, you can instantly perceive that passion with which they try to convince you that there is no better alternative than that. One of the things I had heard before traveling is that the whole process of *bargaining* started as soon as you arrived when trying to get a cab and that if you didn't lock in a price by agreeing on it, you usually ended up paying a lot more. The solution to delay a bit that experience was to book the ride through *Booking* and not to think, at least the first night, about messy negotiations in order to get to the hotel without problems. I initially wanted to avoid it at all costs, as I had read that in gastronomic matters this wasn't a problem, the food always has a set price and there is no need to enter into endless negotiations for a plate of food, so with that I could survive. Besides, I always travel very light and I avoid buying souvenirs, I don't see much sense in accumulating things, although I understand that people like to keep souvenirs of each visit. In my case photos are more than enough, the rest I prefer to enjoy it on the spot.

But it only takes a few simple steps to get you in the city and make you want to dare to try some of the many different things to do in Marrakech. In our experience, it only took a couple of *bargaining* tips from our guide at >> [Free tour - Marrakech](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@ninaeatshere/marrakech-on-a-free-tour-engspa) << (which I reviewed previously), to feel that there was nothing to be afraid of. According to our guide we had to avoid that tendency of tourists to bargain indiscriminately seeking to pay a derisory price for the product of interest, because there comes a turning point in which the seller obviously stops lowering the price. But this situation also depends a lot on the harmony between the negotiators and the feelings that are expressed at the time. The entry price you are asked for something is usually much higher than the real value, the art is to negotiate the fairest price for both parties. Normally it is possible to close the purchase at 30% of the initial value and in some opportunities even at 25%. But you have to be careful and fair, because if the negotiation proceeds in an unpleasant way the seller will not go as low as he could allow. Another piece of advice that the guide gave us and that seemed to me to be one of the most important is that if you are looking for the best price you should try to buy the product at the end of the afternoon, shortly before the seller closes his store. This last recommendation has to do with the belief that salespeople believe that the way they close the last deal of the day defines their luck and how they will fare in the next day's sales. So there is less tendency to want to take a price much higher than the actual value, as their religion professes not to do harm to those around them. This at least was what I understood, maybe there are details that I am missing now or more concrete explanations, but the idea that stayed in my mind about that negotiation process is just as I attempted to explain it here.
># **El temible regateo en Marrakech** >Cuando uno piensa en Marrakech suelen aparecer en nuestra mente una gran cantidad de imágenes exóticas y coloridas, pensamientos que nos llevan a pasear entre palacios de hermosos azulejos y comidas con intensos sabores.
Pero si pensamos en ella como un destino concreto para planear un viaje, dejamos de hacerlo solo con curiosidad y anhelo. Comenzamos a preguntarnos cómo sería enfrentarse a la realidad de un país en donde ciertas costumbres, podrían llegar a parecer incómodas para algunos occidentales.
Hay cientos de diferencias en las que podríamos intentar indagar y de las que no estoy muy segura que se pueda mantener un simple debate comparativo. Pero ese no es el objetivo de esta entrada, por supuesto lo comento porque hubo muchas cosas que anticipaba con preocupación y para las que no sabía si estaría preparada.
El conocidísimo *regateo* era una de las costumbres de la cultura marroquí en las que menos me entusiasmaba indagar. Tanta interacción para adquirir un producto me parece innecesaria, además de percibirlo como una práctica poco formal, pero este pensamiento es parte de una mentalidad totalmente diferente a la del mundo que visitaba y en viajes así, esas diferencias hay que dejarlas fuera.
Para los marroquíes esta tradición va mas allá de hacer negocios, es un arte que define su capacidad para trasmitir el valor del producto que tienen para ofrecerte. Cuando comienzan a hablarte de eso que te interesa y sostienen en sus manos, puedes percibir de forma instantánea esa pasión con la que intentan convencerte de que no hay mejor alternativa que esa.
Una de las cosas que había escuchado antes de viajar es que esa mecánica de *regatear* comenzaba nada más llegar al intentar conseguir un taxi y que si no se cerraba un precio acordándolos de esta manera, normalmente terminabas pagando mucho más. La solución para retrasar un poco esa experiencia fue reservar el traslado a través de *Booking* y no pensar, al menos la primera noche, en turbias negociaciones para poder llegar sin problemas al hotel.
Yo en principio quería evitarlo a toda costa, pues había leído que en cuestiones gastronómicas esto no era un problema, la comida siempre tiene un precio fijo y no hace falta entrar en interminables negociaciones por un plato de comida, así que con eso podía sobrevivir.
Además siempre viajo muy ligera y evito comprar *souvenirs*, no le veo mucho sentido a acumular cosas, aunque entiendo que a la gente le guste mucho eso de conservar recuerdos de cada visita. En mi caso las fotos son más que suficiente, el resto prefiero disfrutarlo en el momento.
Pero no hace falta mucho para que, estando una vez en la ciudad, te llenes de ánimo y quieras atreverte a probar alguna de las tantas cosas diferentes que hay por hacer en Marrakech. En nuestro caso, bastó con un par de consejos para *regatear* que nos dio el guía del >> [Free tour Marrakech](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@ninaeatshere/marrakech-on-a-free-tour-engspa) << (que reseñé previamente), para sentir que no había nada que temer.
Según nuestro guía teníamos que evitar esa tendencia de los turistas a regatear de forma indiscriminada buscando pagar un precio irrisorio por el producto de interés, pues llega un punto en el que el vendedor obviamente deja de bajar el precio. Pero esta situación depende mucho también de la sintonía entre los negociadores y de las sensaciones que se manifiesten en el momento.
El precio de entrada que te piden por algo suele estar muy por encima de del valor real, el arte está en negociar el precio más justo para ambas partes. Normalmente se puede conseguir cerrar la compra al 30% del valor inicial y en algunas oportunidades hasta al 25%. Pero hay que ser cuidadoso y justo, pues si la negociación procede de forma desagradable el vendedor no llegará a bajar todo lo que se podría permitir.
Otro consejo que nos dio el guía y que me pareció de los más importantes es que si se buscaba conseguir el mejor de los precios había que apostar por adquirir el producto al final de la tarde, poco antes de que el vendedor cerrara su tienda.
Esta ultima recomendación tiene que ver con la creencia que tienen los vendedores de que la forma en que cierren la ultima negociación del día, define su suerte y cómo les irá en las ventas del próximo día. Así que hay menos tendencia a querer quedarse con un precio muy superior al del valor real, pues su religión profesa no perjudicar a quienes les rodean.
Esto al menos fue lo que yo entendí, quizá hay detalles que se me escapan ahora o explicaciones más concretas, pero la idea que se quedó en mi mente sobre ese proceso de negociación es tal cual como la he intentado explicar aquí. ![Snake charmers in the distance -Jemaa el-Fna square](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ninaeatshere/242DDuu1qcBU4Jpf2dg6bbT8y56Rq2Q9nRQnD6U2eWyohZYkqaEMs8me3hmtE5JB1Swvw.jpeg) The bargaining adventure begins in the center of activities of *Marrakech*, the mythical **Jemaa el-Fna** square. A place that during the day is full of street vendors offering very curious items and that at night becomes a center of performances and street food stalls. During our visit we avoided frequenting it during the day, because from the morning the famous *snake charmers* and *monkey tamers* set up there. Practices that in particular I find very unpleasant, even though people insisted that it was one of the most typical things to see in the plaza. Although it is a cultural issue, the reality is that this atrocious way of using animals for economic purposes is maintained because there are still tourists interested in it, so the less we look into this, the less motives they will have to continue mistreating these animals. From a distance I could see that the conditions in which they are kept, locked in small cages at unpleasant temperatures, is totally unacceptable. I know that doing nothing is not the solution either, but I have seen many warnings of scams when trying to approach, because they hang the snakes or monkeys to the tourist and until you pay them they do not take them away from you, being the minimum they ask for it about 20.00 €. So the healthiest thing to do seemed to me to stay away. It filled me with sadness and a horrible feeling of helplessness to pass by there, I just hope it won't be too long until this practice stops being productive for them and it is not a spectacle to have these animals deprived of freedom. But well, not everything is focused on that kind of shows, there are also several stalls. There are artisans offering their creations, resellers of natural/medicinal products and many others selling strange things, such as animal heads or horns. We had heard that it was common to see people's teeth for sale but we didn't get any, mostly because we avoided being there for a long time due to the animals. There are also very early in the morning stalls selling natural fruit juices, for which you should always be careful to ask for it without water in order to avoid possible diseases. We didn't try to do any shopping in the square, but we decided to go directly into the **Marrakech souk**, to venture aimlessly among its nooks and crannies and explore the endless options available. The *zocos* are huge popular markets full of handcrafted items from the land. Those that you see in TV documentaries, full of colorful scarves and carpets, silverware and very striking decorative items, besides being able to get inside the winding market some options to taste typical sweets from the country. I remember we were told that the *Marrakech souk* was composed of a huge number of hectares, I honestly don't remember how many there were, which is why it was very easy to get lost. Trusting that the GPS would help us get out while it was still daylight, we set our sights on finding some **Babuchas** that we liked. I also had in mind to get a strap that I liked because I saw so many nice things out there, but by the end of our experience I didn't have the strength to try to negotiate any of them. The *babuchas* are a kind of house shoes, typical of Morocco and made in different versions, which are similar to *slippers* but are usually made of leather. There are those that are made in an industrialized way for mass sale, with more precise and elegant finishes. On the other hand there are the **Bereber** which are the typical ones of Marrakech made in an artisan way, by hand and with a more rudimentary aspect but much more comfortable, these were the ones of our interest. >La aventura del regateo comienza en el centro de actividades de *Marrakech*, la mítica plaza **Jemaa el-Fna**. Un lugar que durante el día está repleto de vendedores ambulates ofreciendo artículos muy curiosos y que por la noche se convierte en un centro de espectáculos callejeros y puestos de comida callejera.
En nuestra visita evitamos frecuentarla durante el día, pues desde la mañana se instalan en ella los famosos *encantadores de serpientes* y *domadores de monos*. Prácticas que en lo particular me parecen muy desagradables, por más que me insistieran en que era de las cosas más típicas que ver en la plaza.
Aunque sea un tema cultural, la realidad es que esa forma atroz de utilizar animales con un fin económico, se mantiene debido a que sigue habiendo turistas interesados en ello, así que mientras menos indaguemos en esto, menos motivos tendrán para seguir maltratando a estos animales.
En la distancia pude observar que las condiciones en que los mantienen, encerrados en pequeñas jaulas a temperaturas desagradables, es totalmente inaceptable. Sé que no hacer nada tampoco es la solución, pero he visto muchas advertencias de estafas al intentar acercarse, pues le cuelgan las serpientes o monos al turista y hasta que no les pagues no te los quitan de encima, siendo lo mínimo que piden por ello unos 20,00 €. Así que lo más sano me pareció mantenerme al margen.
Me llenaba de triste y una horrible sensación de impotencia pasar por allí, simplemente espero que no pase demasiado tiempo hasta que esa práctica deje de serles productiva y no sea un espectáculo tener a esos animales privados de libertad.
Pero bueno, no todo se centra en ese tipo de espectáculos, también hay diversos puestos de venta. Hay artesanos que ofrecen sus creaciones, revendedores de productos naturales/medicinales y muchos otros vendiendo cosas extrañas, como cabezas o cuernos de animales. Habíamos escuchado que era común ver venta de dientes de personas pero no conseguimos alguno, mas que todo porque evitábamos estar mucho rato ahí por el tema de los animales.
También hay desde muy temprano en la mañana tiendas de zumos de frutas naturales, para los que hay que tener siempre el cuidado de pedirlos sin agua y así evitar posibles enfermedades.
Nosotros no intentamos hacer alguna compra en la plaza, sino que decidimos adentrarnos directamente en el **Zoco de Marrakech**, para aventurarnos sin rumbo entre sus recovecos e indagar entre las infinitas opciones que hay disponible.
Los *zocos* son los enormes mercados populares llenos de artículos artesanales de la tierra. Esos que se ven en los documentales de la televisión, llenos de bufandas y alfombras de colores, platería y artículos decorativos muy llamativos, además de conseguir dentro del sinuoso mercado algunas opciones para probar dulces típicos del país. Recuerdo que nos dijeron que el de *zoco de Marrakech* estaba compuesto por un enorme número de hectáreas, sinceramente no recuerdo cuántas eran, motivo por el cual era muy fácil perderse.
Confiando en que el GPS nos ayudaría a salir mientras aun fuera de día, tomamos como objetivo encontrar unas **Babuchas** que nos gustaran. Yo también tenía en mente conseguir una correa que me gustara porque veía muchas cosas bonitas por ahí, pero al final de la experiencia que vivimos no tenía fuerzas para intentar negociar alguna de ellas.
Las *babuchas* son una especie de zapatos de estar en casa, típicas de Marruecos y elaboradas en distintas versiones, que son parecidos a unas *pantuflas* pero que normalmente suelen ser de cuero. Existen las que se elaboran de forma industrializada para la venta masiva, con acabados más precisos y elegantes. Por otro lado están las **Babuchas Bereber** que son las típicas de Marrakech confeccionadas de manera artesanal, a mano y con aspecto más rudimentario pero mucho más cómodas, eran estas las de nuestro interés.

In the outer areas of the *zoco* you find stores that offer various products but as you go deeper into it, you realize that this in turn is divided into smaller *zocos*, separating the products by categories. There is the one for carpets, leather, lamps, clothes and so on. We arrived at the *Slippers souk* and saw the large number of mini-shops offering the product. The thing is that we went quite deep into the *slippers souk* and the image of this alley will never leave my mind, I think it is the only thing that has remained of the memory of the first negotiation to which we were exposed. The process was so intense that I couldn't even take a moment to take a picture of the store and how beautiful so many colors looked together. The salespeople are very good at what they do, immediately greeting you in different languages so they know how to communicate with you. We found one man to be trustworthy and from the beginning he was very friendly, talking to me in English and slurring a bit of Spanish for my companion. He guided us to his store assuring us that it was the place to find the best product, I imagine they all use the same speech, then we were greeted by the one who was attending the store next door and I was surprised to see that he was also helping the one who was attending us to make the sale. Without trying to divert our attention to his store, that seemed to me to be a very correct thing to do. In addition, the one in the next store, who was much younger, made some jokes to make us feel more at ease while we watched and listened to explanations, and also went in search of some product to another store so that his companion could show us more variety. Our salesman explained to us that the triangular-tipped *babuchas* were typical of the Arab world, while the really Moroccan ones were the *Bereber*, from the indigenous area of Marrakech and had a very rounded tip. It allowed us to try both and realize how really comfortable the latter were. They know how to make you feel engaged and feel that they are there doing everything they can to please you, they even managed to convince us to want to buy some other pair of products that, despite being precious, would not be of any use to us in our daily lives. We realized the rapture with which they had enchanted us, when we told them that we didn't need anything else and that we wanted to pay, then even though we were holding only what we wanted to take, they made us a price for another additional product so that we could *take advantage* of it. It was complicated to make him understand in a language that the salesman didn't handle very well, that we didn't want or need those other shoes. But this one was very insistent and it got to a point where my traveling companion got frustrated and started to get very cranky, after the insistence that he take some Arabian slippers as well, which supposedly fit him perfectly. In this aspect, we were erring on the side of curiosity by asking for everything and not making it clear from the beginning, that he was not going to want that particular product. In the end I managed to explain to the seller that if he continued to insist we would leave with nothing, not because he was not serving us well but because my partner was feeling offended, that was what made the seller react and stop insisting, despite continuing to convey his discomfort for having rejected a product that he had made an effort to get to his measure. But the important thing was the way he started the negotiation, I was expecting him to tell me a starting price and to insist a little so that he would lower it without exaggerating so much, at least I was not planning to pay more than what I could pay in Spain for the same product. But what happened was that he put paper and pencil in my hand and told me to tell him what that was worth to me. I was totally blank and I do not remember in the least what I said at first or how many times I rebutted him, I do not think it was too much because I'm not a fan of that kind of thing, I know that when I asked him to lower the price he offered me a speech about the quality of the product and made comparisons that I do not remember. With my partner it was more of the same and I seem to remember that he ended up paying a little less than me on his purchase, that also had to do with the seller apologizing for the uncomfortable situation he made him go through and let's say he gave him a discount for the inconvenience, according to him of course. Anyway, if I remember correctly I paid about 15,00€ for two pairs of *showers*, some purple ones for me and a child pair in red to give as a gift. The ones for me were not so easy to get, they have an embroidered detail for which the sellers went round and round looking in stores for some embroidery that was not so brightly colored, I wanted it in a dark color but there was none, the girls' ones were all very bright and the green was the most subtle one they offered me. Honestly I'm sure I could have paid less, there was a feeling during the buying process that made me feel it, but I was already fed up with the whole situation and I wanted to end it once and for all. >En las zonas más externas del *zoco* encuentras tiendas que ofrecen varios productos pero a medida que te vas adentrando en él, te das cuenta que este a su vez está dividido en *zocos* mas pequeños, separando por categorías los productos. Está el de las alfombras, el de los cueros, de lamparas, ropa y pare de contar. Nosotros llegamos al *Zoco de las babuchas* y vimos la gran cantidad de mini tiendas que ofrecían el producto.
La cuestión es que nos adentramos bastante en el *zoco* y la imagen de este callejón nunca se va a ir de mi mente, creo que es lo único que me ha quedado del recuerdo de la primera negociación a la que nos vimos expuestos. El proceso fue tan intenso que ni siquiera pude tomarme un rato para hacer alguna fotografía de la tienda y de lo bonito que se veían tantos colores juntos.
Lo vendedores son muy buenos en lo que hacen, inmediatamente te saludan en diferentes idiomas para saber cómo comunicarse contigo. A nosotros nos pareció de fiar un hombre que desde el comienzo fue muy amable, hablaba conmigo en inglés y chapuceaba un poco de español para mi compañero.
Nos guió a su tienda asegurándonos que era el lugar en donde se encontraba el mejor producto, imagino que todos utilizan el mismo discurso, entonces nos saludó el que atendía la tienda de al lado y me sorprendió ver que también ayudaba a quien nos atendía a nosotros a que hiciera la venta. Sin intentar desviar nuestra atención hacia la tienda de él, eso me pareció algo muy correcto.
Además el de la tienda de al lado, que era bastante más joven, hacía alguna que otra broma para que nos sintiéramos más a gusto mientras veíamos y escuchábamos explicaciones, además fue en búsqueda de algún producto a otra tienda para que su compañero nos mostrara más variedad.
Nuestro vendedor nos explicaba que las *babuchas* de punta triangular eran típicas del mundo arabé, mientras que las realmente marroquíes eran las *Bereber*, de la zona indígena de Marrakech y que tenían una punta muy redonda. Nos permitió probar ambas y darnos cuenta de lo realmente cómodas que eran las segundas.
Saben como hacerte sentir comprometido y sentir que están ahí haciendo todo lo posible por complacerte, hasta llegaron a convencernos de querer adquirir algún otro par de productos que, a pesar de ser preciosos, no nos serían de utilidad alguna en nuestra vida cotidiana.
Nos percatamos del embelesamiento con que nos había encantado, al momento de decirle que no necesitábamos nada más y que queríamos pagar, entonces a pesar de que sosteníamos solo lo que queríamos llevar, nos hacían precio por otro producto adicional para que *aprovecháramos*.
Era complicado hacer entender en un idioma que el vendedor no manejaba del todo bien, que no queríamos o necesitábamos esos otros zapatos. Pero este era muy insistente y llegó un punto en que mi compañero de viaje se frustró y comenzó a ponerse de muy mal humor, tras las insistencia en que se llevara unas zapatillas árabes también, que supuestamente le quedaban perfectas. En este aspecto pecamos de curiosos preguntando por todo y no dejando claro desde un principio, que no iba a querer ese producto en particular.
Al final logré explicarle al vendedor que si seguía insistiendo nos iríamos sin nada, no porque no nos estuviese atendiendo bien sino porque mi compañero estaba sintiéndose ofendido, eso fue lo que hizo que el vendedor reaccionara y dejara de insistir, a pesar continuar transmitiendo su malestar por haberle rechazado un producto que se había esforzado en conseguir a su medida.
Pero a lo importante fue la forma en que comenzó la negociación, yo me esperaba que me dijera un precio de partida e insistirle un poco para que me rebajara sin exagerar tanto, al menos no pensaba pagar más de lo que podría pagar en España por el mismo producto. Pero lo que sucedió fue que me puso papel y lápiz en la mano y dijo que le indicara lo que para mí valía eso.
Me quedé totalmente en blanco y no recuerdo en lo más mínimo que dije al principio ni cuantas veces le rebatí, no creo que haya sido demasiado porque no soy fan de ese tipo de cosas, se que al pedirle bajar el precio él me ofrecía un discurso sobre la calidad del producto y hacía comparativas que no recuerdo.
Con mi compañero fue más de lo mismo y creo recordar que él terminó pagando un poco menos que yo en su compra, eso también tuvo que ver con que el vendedor le pedía disculpas por la situación incomoda que le hizo pasar y digamos que le hizo un descuento por las molestias, según él claro.
De todas formas, si mal no recuerdo pagué unos 15,00€ por dos pares de *babuchas*, unas moradas para mí y un par infantil en rojo para regalar. Las que serían para mí no fueron tan vaciles de conseguir, tienen un detalle bordado por el que los vendedores dieron muchas vueltas buscando en tiendas algún bordado que no fuera de colores tan llamativos, lo quería de color oscuro pero no lo había, las de chicas todas brillaban mucho y el verde fue el mas sutil que me ofrecieron.

After paying the man, very apologetic according to him he said to allow him to offer us a mint tea at no cost, he insisted that it was very important to him and even though we wanted to stop interacting with him we couldn't say no and followed him to the place where he would serve it to us which according to him was very close. The truth was that we went around a few times in order to get to the place in question, it didn't take us too long but I can assure you that he had no idea how to get back to the *showers* store. On the way the salesman explained to us, insisting that we should not worry because the tea would be free, that he was directing us to his brother's *pharmacy*, with whom we would surely feel more comfortable because he was more fluent in languages having had to study to attend that *Moroccan pharmacy*. La verdad fue que dimos unas cuantas vueltas para poder llegar al lugar en cuestión, no tardamos demasiado tiempo pero puedo asegurar que no tenía idea de cómo volver a la tienda de *babuchas*.
En el camino el vendedor nos explico, insistiendo en que no nos preocupáramos porque el té sería gratis, que nos dirigía a la *farmacia* de su hermano, con quien seguramente nos sentiríamos más cómodos porque dominaba más los idiomas al haber tenido que estudiar para atender esa *farmacia marroquí*.

She talked about the importance of using natural products in their culture and the variety of treatments they had available. Honestly we felt very comfortable, my partner had already planned to buy some bags of that tea that everywhere they offered us and it was so tasty so we thought it was a good place to buy it, plus we did not mind sitting there for a while. They explained to us the correct way to prepare the tea and the importance of serving it as shown in the small video I was allowed to make. The foam is important, it is generated by serving it from very high up and it is understood as a way of indicating that they are happy about your visit and being happy to offer you the tea. Sinceramente nos sentíamos muy cómodos, mi compañero tenía pensado ya adquirir algunas bolsas de ese té que en todos lados nos ofrecían y era tan rico así que nos pareció un buen sitio para adquirirlo, además no nos molestaba estar un rato allí sentados.
Nos explicaron la forma correcta de preparar el té y la importancia de servirlo como se muestra en el pequeño video que me autorizaron a hacer. La espuma es importante, se genera al servirlo desde muy alto y se entiende como una forma de indicar que les alegra tu visita y estando contentos de ofrecerte el té. Tras prepararnos el té, el hermano mayor se devolvió a su tienda y nos dejó con el de la farmacia que siguió hablándonos de las maravillas de sus productos. Nos explicó lo importante que es el aceite de argán en su cultura y nos mostró una imagen que tiene en la tienda donde se ve que las cabras están siempre sobre los árboles de argán comiéndose los frutos.
Finalmente, entre tantas cosas que nos mostró yo me decanté por comprar ahí el famoso **Ras el hanut**, una mezcla de más de 20 especias que supuestamente es buena para esa gente que no sabe cocinar porque al echárselo a la comida siempre queda bien.
Yo quería comprarlo, pero antes de ser llevados a este lugar había olido un par de mezclas de este y ninguna me había parecido tan agradable como esta. Así que decidí comprarla aquí. But that wasn't the end of it, we didn't realize that we had entered a sales network in which, in a friendly way, they take you from one place to another so that you keep buying things. We were asked by the guy at the pharmacy, after buying from him of course, if we had seen how the artisan tanners made the fabrics, he said it was a very nice experience to see and that we couldn't miss it. We told him that we no longer intended to buy anything else because we had spent the money, which was relatively true because we had changed to the crazy currency only a certain amount to avoid falling into temptations, to which he replied laughing that it was just so that we would not miss the opportunity to enjoy it. He made us see it as if it were a show, or an event that took place at certain times and that we just had the opportunity to see it end. With that idea in mind we thought it would not be a bad idea, at the end we were there walking around and the intention was to see as many typical things as possible. So we went into the world of textiles. >Pero ahí no acababa todo, no nos terminábamos de dar cuenta que habíamos entrado en una red de ventas en la que, de forma amistosa, te llevan de un sitio a otro para que sigas comprando cosas. Entre ellos tendrán sus tratos y saben cómo hacer para que te dejes convencer.
A nosotros el chico de la farmacia nos preguntó, luego de comprarle por supuesto, sí habíamos visto cómo los curtidores artesanos elaboraban las telas, dijo que era una experiencia muy bonita de ver y que no podíamos perdérnosla.
Le dijimos que ya no teníamos intención de comprar nada más porque nos habíamos gastado el dinero, cosa que era relativamente cierta porque habíamos cambiado a la moneda loca solo cierta cantidad para evitar caer en tentaciones, a lo que él respondió riendo que era solo para que no perdiéramos la oportunidad de disfrutar de ello.
Nos lo hizo ver como si fuera un show, o un evento que se realizaba en momentos determinados y que justamente teníamos la oportunidad de verlo finalizar. Con esa idea en la cabeza pensamos que no sería mala idea, al final estábamos ahí paseando y la intención era ver todas las cosas típicas posibles.
Entonces nos adentramos en el mundo de las telas.

We couldn't deny how impressive and beautiful all those freshly dyed fabrics were hanging, surrounded by a lot of rudimentary gadgets and all full of stains that reflected the work of each day. We were greeted by a craftsman who seemed huge to me, a very tall and friendly man with a big smile on his face. Our first words were warnings that we did not want to buy anything, the man said to be calm that his intention was to show us some magic. He also spoke quite good Spanish and made us feel very comfortable. He told us to approach a table where he had a small exhibition of natural inks that according to him looked very nice in the photo, he said this when he saw me doing some shots, I was amused by his way of wanting to get my attention and I decided to see what he was doing. The truth is that he did surprise me, he showed us how those organic colors in powder, changed to a totally different color when in contact with water and he told us that each color we saw was not what it seemed. For example the brown transformed into blue and he showed us how to engrave it. Of course this artisan was also a skilled salesman, he kept repeating that it was not to make us buy but to show us the beauty of the work they were doing and explained that they made scarves, or rather handkerchiefs I don't know what to call them, from cactus silk. He said that they extract very thin threads from this plant with which they made these fabrics. So he took us to where they were all the ones he had for sale. It was a beautiful mosaic, there were all colors and combinations. Right now I'm thinking how I didn't take a picture of the scarves but of course, remembering that moment I understand that it would have been impossible, the seller managed to attract our attention at all times and the pictures we took were really because he told us things like "Oh how pretty you look, take a picture". >No podíamos negar lo realmente impresionante y bonito que lucían todas esas telas recien teñidas colgadas, rodeadas de una gran cantidad de artilugios rudimentarios y todo lleno de manchas que reflejaban el trabajo de cada día.
Nos recibió un artesano que me pareció enorme, un hombre muy alto y amable que mostraba una gran sonrisa. Nuestra primeras palabras fueron advertencias de que no queríamos comprar nada, el hombre dijo que estuviéramos tranquilos que su intención era mostrarnos algo de magia. Este también hablaba bastante bien español y nos hizo sentir muy cómodos.
Nos dijo que nos acercáramos a una mesa donde tenía una pequeña exposición de tintas naturales que según él quedaban muy bonitas en la foto, esto lo dijo cuando me vio haciendo algunas tomas, me causó gracia su forma de querer llamar mi atención y me dispuse a ver lo que hacía.
La verdad es que sí me sorprendió, nos mostró como esos colores orgánicos en polvo, cambiaban a un color totalmente diferente al entrar en contacto con el agua y nos dijo que cada color que veíamos no era lo que parecía. Por ejemplo el marrón se transformaba en azul y nos lo enseñó para grabarlo.
Por supuesto este artesano también era un hábil vendedor, repetía a cada momento que no era para hacernos comprar si no para que viéramos lo bonito del trabajo que hacían y nos explicaba que elaboraban bufandas, o más bien pañuelos no sé como llamarles, de seda de cáctus. Dijo que extraen hilos muy delgados de esta planta con los que confeccionaban esas telas.
Así que nos acercó a donde estaban todas las que él tenía dispuestas para la venta. Era un mosaico hermoso la verdad, las había de todos los colores y combinaciones. This man is a real artist, he would stare at the different fabrics and say "This one, this one is perfect for you" and he would show us the different ways to dress it up. He explained that it was not only ornamental, there were some ways to arrange it so that the heat in the desert would not show on the head. He chose a very colorful one for me, it was beautiful but it didn't suit my style at all, then he let us record some ways to put them on to know how to wear them, in my mind I was already thinking what to buy even though we had agreed not to buy anything. A man with a lot of charm, he made jokes and compliments, I laughed a lot while he showed us his work. When he finished putting the scarf so that it covered almost all my face, he told me that I had become a "Fatima", a very common name there, that made me laugh a lot. >El hombre es todo un artista, se quedaba observando las telas y decía “Esta, esta es perfecta para tí” y nos mostraba las distintas formas de vestirlas. Nos explicaba que no era solo ornamental, había algunas formas de disponerlas para que el calor en el desierto no se notara en la cabeza.
Eligió para mí una muy colorida, era preciosa sinceramente pero de ninguna manera iba con mi estilo, entonces nos permitió grabar algunas formas de ponerlas para saber como llevarlas puestas, en mi mente ya estaba yo pensando que llevarme y eso que habíamos acordado no comprar nada.
Un hombre con mucho carisma, nos hacía chistes y piropos, yo me reí muchísimo mientras nos enseñaba su labor. En el momento en que termina de ponerme el pañuelo de forma que tapara casi todo mi rostro me dijo que me había convertido en una “Fátima”, un nombre muy común allí, eso me hizo mucha gracia.
También nos dijo que no todas eran solamente de seda de cactus, esas eran las mas suaves y delicadas, pero también las hacían solo de algodón o con una mezcla de ambas, esto dependía mucho de la finalidad y del gusto por supuesto.
Al tacto todas se sentían muy bien, aunque yo no podía evitar preferir esa seda de cactus, era muy agradable al tacto. Mi compañero eligió una mezcla, él la prefería así, quizá porque los colores fuesen más opacos aunque según él era por el tacto.

After all we both wanted to buy, I fell in love with a purple scarf for me and a black one to give as a gift, but we were honest with the seller we didn't have much money left, but before telling him what we had, my friend got all the bargaining potential learned in our first experience. He embarked on a bargaining process that this time he really enjoyed and we ended up taking three scarves for about 16,00€ each approximately. The seller also insisted on asking for a little more but when we showed him what he had in his wallet he said it was enough and they stopped haggling. According to the recommendation of the guide who had advised us how to negotiate, we managed to pay 25% of the initial price, which is very good and rightly so, my friend told me that after closing the sale the seller commented that he would close the deal for the day. So we were also able to verify the recommendation to buy late in the afternoon to get the best price. Before we left the seller told us that for him every sale was very important because he had to take the money home and he showed us pictures of his almost baby children who were waiting for him. I thought it was good that he commented on this at the end, because he did not use his family as a way to dissuade us from the negotiation. I would go back to this store, I really liked the quality of these fabrics. A highly recommended experience. >A final de cuentas ambos quisimos comprar, yo me enamoré de una bufanda morada para mí y otra negra para regalar, pero fuimos sinceros con el vendedor no nos quedaba mucho dinero, pero antes de decirle lo que teníamos, a mi amigo le salió todo el potencial del regateo aprendido en nuestra primera experiencia.
Se embarcó en un proceso de negociación que esta vez sí disfrutó mucho y terminamos llevándonos tres bufandas por unos 16,00 € cada una aproximadamente. El vendedor también insistía en pedir un poco más pero al mostrarle lo que tenía en la cartera dijo que era suficiente y dejaron el regateo.
Según la recomendación del guía que nos había aconsejado como negociar, logramos pagar un 25% del precio inicial, lo cual está muy bien y con razón, me dijo mi amigo que luego de cerrar la venta el vendedor comentó que ya cerraría el negocio por ese día. Así que pudimos comprobar también la recomendación de comprar a ultima hora de la tarde para obtener el mejor precio.
Antes de irnos el vendedor nos dijo que para él cada venta era muy importante porque tenía que llevar el dinero a casa y nos mostró fotos de sus hijos casi bebés que le estaban esperando. Me pareció bien que lo comentara al final, porque no utilizó a su familia como forma de disuadirnos de la negociación.
Yo a esta tienda volvería, la verdad es que me gustó mucho la calidad de estas telas. Una experiencia muy recomendaba.

I didn't even remember that I wanted to look for a leash and we just wandered around the rest of the market. You can also continue the custom of bargaining at nightfall returning to the *Jemaa el-Fna* square, you can walk more quietly because the snake charmers are no longer there. La verdad es que celebramos haber salido del bucle en el que los vendedores nos había metido, llevándonos de un lado a otro con sus compañeros de ventas. Yo ya ni me acordaba de que tenía ganas de buscar una correa y solo nos dedicamos a pasear por el resto del *zoco*.
También se puede continuar la costumbre de regatear al caer la noche regresando a la plaza *Jemaa el-Fna*, se puede caminar más tranquilamente porque dejan de estar los encantadores de serpientes. The most interesting thing about this square in the evenings is the exotic gastronomy they offer, of course something that gives a lot to talk about and that I will comment on soon. Another impressive thing is the amount of people and all the activity that goes on there until late in the evening. The lighting is scarce and it is not easy to reflect all that is experienced with a photo from a cell phone, but believe me the dimensions of what you see in the image are enormous. >Hubo un momento que nos acercamos mucho a unas lamparas que le interesaban a mi acompañante, sin embargo no se decidió por ninguna aunque estuvo un rato viéndolas y eso me permitió jugar un poco con ellas para tomar algunas fotos que, a pesar de poderse mejorar mucho, me gustaron.
Lo más interesante de esta plaza en las noches es la gastronomía exótica que ofrecen, por supuesto algo que da mucho de que hablar y que comentaré próximamente.
Otra cosa impresionante es la cantidad de gente y toda la actividad que se desarrolla ahí hasta altas horas de la tarde. I'm having a hard time trying to synthesize all the information and experiences during this trip, every time I start writing about those moments and remembering every detail, I feel it's impossible to stop making more and more comments about it. It is possible that perhaps there is a more accurate and optimal way to tell this story, but it doesn't appeal to me, I really enjoy reliving those moments as if I were watching a movie. Maybe at some point my traveling companion in this experience will decide to tell his version of the story, for now I will allocate a small part of the rewards received in this post to thank the photos he took of me with my phone, while the artisan was putting the scarf on me, because I really liked them! I hope that some of this can help someone visiting the city of *Marrakech* in the future, it would be great if our blogs could be a reference for those travelers who like to prepare before leaving. >Me está costando mucho resumir toda la información y las vivencias experimentadas durante este viaje, cada vez que comienzo a escribir sobre esos momento y a recordar cada detalle, siento que es imposible dejar de hacer más y más comentarios al respecto.
Es posible que haya una forma mas precisa y óptima de contar esta historia, pero no me resulta atractiva, disfruto mucho reviviendo esos momentos como si estuviese viendo una película.
Quizás en algún momento mi compañero de viaje en esta experiencia se decida a contar su versión de la historia, por ahora destinaré una pequeña parte de las recompensas recibidas en este post para agradecer las fotos que me ha hecho con mi teléfono, mientras el artesano me colocaba la bufanda, ¡porque me gustaron mucho!
Espero que parte de esto pueda ayudar a alguien que visite la ciudad de *Marrakech* en un futuro, sería genial que nuestros blogs sean referencia para los esos viajeros a los que les gusta prepararse antes de partir.
