You know something bad is going to happen when the episode opens on Ed Baldwin and Alex just sitting at a table eating lunch at the Ilia restaurant in the Happy Valley promenade, regular everyday life, nothing threatening about it and then the peacekeepers march Lee Jung Gil through the mall area in handcuffs while his wife Nam Moon Yeong is screaming her lungs out, this entire colony is an experiment so nothing ever can stay smooth as silk, there is always something going on. The whole thing becomes so tense because Happy Valley is starting to look like a full police state and Palmer immediately threatens to arrest anyone for unlawful assembly just because five people are standing there asking basic questions about what is happening to their friend. As expected and as usual it is, Ed does not even hesitate, he just stands up and gives a chest bump with his fist on his heart right in front of the peacekeepers, which is such a direct way to tell the authorities exactly where he stands. He rips off his own ankle monitor so the peacekeepers are forced to lock him up in the holding cell right next to Lee, basically a tiny cage where they can finally talk face to face and throwing himself in jail just to have a conversation is not the most creative middle finger to the system but you got to give Ed credit. That scene with them sitting next to each other in those cells is great because Lee looks Ed straight in the eye and swears he did not commit the murder and for Ed that is enough to go to war. The other thing that absolutely ruled was the secret meeting in the back of the Ilia restaurant where Ed gives everyone including Miles the chance to walk away before they plan a full blown heist to hijack the prisoner transport rover. They execute the plan by having Ed drop the air pressure inside the rover so the guards pass out from lack of oxygen, which is a smart and ruthless tactic that reminds you how dangerous these veteran astronauts can be when pushed into a corner, and watching Ed take control with a breath mask while the peacekeepers slowly realize they are losing consciousness is damn intense because you are always waiting for something to go wrong. The whole situation with Dev in his fancy office with that old 2012 iMac and the massive model of his dream city Meru on the wall just feels tedious because he refuses to help Lee to protect his political capital. I get that he needs to play the game to build his independent Mars colony but watching him act so selfish when a man is literally facing a death sentence on Earth is frustrating and makes it hard to root for him. Then you have this strange attempt by Palmer to blackmail Miles in the dark ruins of the Ilia bar, makes it feel like a cheap way to force drama between the characters. Palmer tells Miles to become a confidential informant or the whole Sons and Daughters of Mars group is going to find out what he did back in 2003, that right there was very sheaky and the leverage is that Miles sold out his own people so you boy is against the wall and the skelleton from the closets want out. It does not really fit in because Palmer already looks like the bad guy so stacking one more shady move on top of everything else just makes him feel cartoonish and not really dangerous but I guess thats how ridiculous when rats are no longer ashame of their doing. Another part that annoyed me was the interaction between Kelly and Walt when Dev puts Walt in command of the Titan mission but forces Kelly to be the pilot against his wishes. You really feel that shift through Boyd, the new peacekeeper who is doing her own investigation with physical files and chasing leads that keep not adding up the way the official story says they should. She goes out near the Kuragin space elevator worksite and starts connecting the murder victim to the company, finding out that Yoon Tae Min was doing night surface work for them and that a hopper was unloading cargo near the elevator that does not appear anywhere on the official manifest. When she tries to ask questions she gets stonewalled immediately, which tells you everything you need to know about how these mega corporations operate out there, sometimes this shows just predict whats going to happen in real life becuase it most likely will be the same once humans get to Mars. It is a fascinating contrast to the early seasons where everyone was united by the terror of exploring the unknown and now the environment is conquered and human greed has taken over the whole thing pushing the tone into dark political thriller territory. On the other side they still manage to inject that classic wonder when the SEEKER data comes back from Titan with glitchy and incomplete readings, and Aleida says it shows strong evidence that something is making proteins there before the robots go completely dark. That corrupted signal suggesting the building blocks of something extraordinary may exist out there brings back the old school space race energy that made this series famous, and this kinda balances all the depressing corporate corruption with the breathtaking possibility of finding something alien out there, it was about damn time we get aliens on this series. Seeing Aleida stay cautious while everyone else geeks out over the protein discovery creates a great contrast between the reality of their daily lives almost cynical and the hope that deep space exploration still offers. https://i.imgur.com/uwwnjtd.png

https://i.imgur.com/r0yj9oi.png The end of the episode is a masterpiece of tension that left me wanting to watch the next episode but this things are 45 min long and it was 1:15 a.m, a man got to sleep, but it was really intense during the escape scene the pilot gets shot by a guard which forces Ed to take the controls of the hopper himself even though he has been warned he is not supposed to fly because of his health condition. Watching Ed push that hopper to the red line while coughing up blood and wiping it on his khaki pants is one of the most intense things this show has done, remind me that time he missed touching the moon for the first time since then he doesnt hesitate anymore, because you know he is risking his own life just to get Lee to the ISN base where there is no extradition treaty, yeah I was like WTF now people get extradite from Mars. The sacrifice is so damn powerful and when Boyd finally breaches the hopper only to find Ed passed out in the pilot seat and calls for a medic I wonder if this is really the end of an absolute legend. Ed is now a full blown traitor to the M6 alliance and the fallout from this insane hopper flight is going to make the next few episodes a bloodbath of corporate and political retaliation. I am also really glad the show included the traditional Baldwin spaghetti dinner earlier in the episode where Ed covers his food in that cheap fake parmesan cheese dust and tells Kelly to roll the hard six and force her will on the Titan mission. That dinner is a quiet family moment, perfect contrast next to the extreme risk Ed takes, that makes both scenes hit harder, because the whole thing he believes in is that playing it safe is how you lose.
