The Cranium Stadium

As always, before we get into this week’s challenge, I must first announce last week’s winner.

Winner from Week #5
@doughtaker

Great work, @doughtaker! You were the only one who was able to answer both questions completely correctly. You are on a roll with this contest! This week’s prize pool is 0.34 SBD. It has already been transferred to your account.

Answer to Question #1 (from Week #5)

For the first question, you had to decode the following message and tell me who said it and which movie it was in:

”_HSY_HOGANYFIZYIMGYSGJYZDYIMGOGAYFIZ”

Answer: “The Things You Own End Up Owning You.” - Tyler Durden in Fight Club

This was the most difficult message to decode as even the spaces were not given to you - they were also represented in the code. And the code was random - it was not just an alphabet shift. Here was the code:

Two Steemians got this question correct: @gaintshoulder and @doughtaker. For that, you both got a 100% upvote from me.

Answer to Question #2 (from Week #5)

This was a two-part story problem. Here is the original problem:

A man walks 300 km to the north, then turns and walks 10,000 m to the east, then turns to the south and runs 4,000,000 cm. After that he takes a break to eat 5 muffins. It takes him 32.5 seconds to eat the muffins before continuing on. He walks to the west for 80,000,000 nm. He then turns to the south and runs at a speed of 1.5 km/min for 3.25 hours. Based on this answer the two following questions:

A

What is the total distance traveled?

B

How far is he from the starting point?

In order to answer the first part of the question, you need to convert all of distances to the same unit. For ease, I just converted everything to meters. Once you convert everything to meters you just need to add everything together. Oh, and you need to figure out one distance: how far south did he go. You get that by multiplying the speed times the time (again, must have the same units). Once you get all that, you will add together the following:

300,000 m + 10,000 m + 40,000 m + 0.08 m + 292,500 m
Answer: 642,500.08 m

The second part is a little more challenging. You need to figure out the total distance north/south, and the total distance east/west, and then use the Pythagorean Theorem to get the distance from the starting point (this is also called displacement).

Distance N/S = 300,000 m - 40,000 m - 292,500 m = - 32,500 m
Distance E/W = 10,000 m - 0.08 m = 9,999.92 m

Once you have those two, you can use the Pythagorean Theorem because all of this info makes a triangle:

IMG_5757.JPG

(9999.92 m)^2 + (32,500 m)^2 = c^2
Answer = 34,003.65 m

For this question, only @doughtaker got it completely correct. We had a couple other very close answers, though!

Without further ado, let’s move onto this week’s challenges!

Remember, to enter, you need to do the following:

  • Put your answer in a comment on this post. Please don’t say HOW you got the answer and spoil the fun for everyone else. :)
  • Upvote this post (that is where your reward will come from!)
  • Make sure to answer all parts of all questions
  • Each participant is allowed ONLY ONE entry. Only the most recent comment by each participant will be evaluated.

Optional but appreciated:

  • Resteem this post so that more Steemians can see it and increase the reward pool!

Rewards

Everyone who gets 1 out of the 2 challenges correct will get an upvote by me.

After post payout, I will give 50% of the SBD earned from the post to the winner (the first person to get both questions correct).

Most importantly, fun and a good mental activity to help your brain stay strong!

This Week's Problems

#1 - Partially Decode This Message - Number Code

Okay, up to this point, we have only used the alphabet to represent itself. This week, I am going to try something a bit different. In this week’s puzzle, each number (0-9) will represent 2 different letters. Six letters of the alphabet will represent themselves. So, for example, in the code, a “2” might represent a “K” and a “M”. To make it a bit easier, the spaces are in the correct places for you. With that in mind, here is the scrambled message:

”1 63U874Y 38 1 323US179 4I14S 4US3 042I7 5I32 1 SI7214 S345.”

The letter “O” is represented by a number, so the “0” in the code is “zero”.

Now, your job is NOT to tell me what the full code is. All you need to answer is:

  • Which two letters of the alphabet are represented by the number 3?
  • And what number represents J?

#2 - Reflection Challenge

Use the following drawing and the description to answer the question:

IMG_5758.JPG

A laser is fired at a flat mirror and hits the mirror at a point 65 cm from the laser output. The reflected laser travels to a second flat mirror that is directly above the outlet of the laser. Using the information in the drawing, what is the distance “x” (the distance between the center of the output of the laser and the point where the laser strikes the second mirror)? Round to two decimal places.

Have fun and do your best!
