Apologies for the recent stream of dsound postings, it was the easiest way to get our performance of Gille's Messe de Morts (Requiem) up onto dsound.

Jean Gilles (1668-1705) is one of the lesser known composers of the French Baroque. Born after Campra and a predecessor to Rameau, this Messe de Morts (Requiem) is the best known work by him. As such, there is not so much to write about him as the scholarship about him is still quite obscure.

However, there is much to write about the form of the Requiem. A requiem is a based upon the mass for the dead in the Catholic setting. Most musical settings of the Requiem use the Latin version. There are Requiem surviving fro the Gregorian times, for instance settings by Ockeghem and Dufay. The liturgy (words) have remained the same (or similar) through to the Baroque and Classical eras, despite the styles of music changing through the ages.

Many composers have tried their hand at setting the Mass of the Dead to music. Often (but not always), they were written in dedication to the passing of a particular person. Perhaps the most famous example is the one by Mozart. However, there are quite famous settings by Faure, Penderecki, Brahms among many others.

Our performance of the Gille Messe de Morts was performed in collaboration with the Nederlands Vocaal Ensemble, and was directed by Jorn Boysen as part of his farewell concert after leading the choir for many years.
