It is the time of year when spring fever is upon us.... but have you heard of chick fever?
Anyone who is starting up their chickens this year or adding to their current flock know this fever. We experienced it last year.
I work at a small feed store that distributes chicks so I kind of know what to expect.
If you are getting chick soon here is what I would recommend:
1st- know what breed or breeds are good for your area and your home. Do your research. Not all breeds are created equal.
2nd- how many will work. Chickens are different sizes and also require a certain amount of space. To much and in the winter they freeze. To little and they are fighting and pooping all over each other. If you have a large run or free range this will change things also.
3rd- Where to get them.
Now I would recommend getting your chicks from a local farm but if that is not an option then try getting your chicks from a local small feed store..... however if that is also not an option where should you go.....
You may have to leave your current location and maybe have to go to a farm town area and look for a feed store.... the big box feed store do sell chicks. You may also be able to pick up chicks at a pet store, that being said I personally would drive way out of the way to pick them up at a small feed store or farm before I do that.
Okay that being said....
4th- what is the stores policy for ordering chicks?
This is easy.... ask.
These are just a few things to think about when getting chicks.
what else though should you know about getting your chicks? Where should they stay? How long till they lay? So many questions and I have some answers.
