From Chicks to Chickens and Cockerels

It amazes me how in just three short months we went from having twenty curious and fluffy chicks in a homemade brooder to having twenty crazy chickens and cockerels in a coop!

Our adventure into the world of raising poultry started with an order of chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery. Since we couldn't decide on just one breed we went with a straight run, heavy breed assortment. We knew we needed heavy breeds in order for them to thrive in the long cold seasons of Northwestern Montana and figured having the surprise of not knowing how many would be male or female and which breeds we would get would be a fun introduction into raising poultry, plus it was more cost effective to get multiple birds in one order.

We've been happy with the birds and the customer service we received from www.mcmurrayhatchery.com and we plan to order from them again either this season or next spring.

Their coop and run are far from being complete, but the chickens don't seem to mind. They certainly are funny to watch!
More posts with photos to come as they go about their crazy antics and we finish their home.
