The pack leader is finally here, launched in Sebring Orange to make sure you notice all the significant upgrades that no doubt make it the fastest street car GM has ever made. This is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

Not all Corvette generations spawn a ZR1, but the previous one from 2009 left quite an impression with its 638 horsepower LS9. Eight years wiser, the Corvette team used all they had to create a worthy successor. Looking at all the figures, the C7 ZR1 shouldn't disappoint.

As a targa or a convertible, the ZR1’s flamboyant bodywork clearly denotes the pinnacle of the Corvette lineup. Peeking out from under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that pushes a fierce 755 hp to the rear wheels while shooting flames out of the tailpipes. That giant wing? It’s optional and provides up to 950 pounds of downforce. Other performance-enhancing kit includes a limited-slip differential and an adaptive suspension. The ZR1 hits dealers in spring 2018 priced around $120,000.

Interestingly, although it hasn’t officially confirmed it, GM is known to be working on a mid-engine supercar that may replace the Corvette next year. It's doing this because it thinks that it's reached the limits of performance for a front-engine design. Based on what the ZR1 can do, it’s almost scary to imagine how fast that one will be on the track.

Not only does the ZR1 have a more-efficient intercooler system with a heat extractor hole in its hood, but it also packs four new radiators, bringing the number of heat-exchangers to 13. A Bugatti Veyron has 10.

While this car contains the most carbon fiber GM has ever put in a vehicle, the extra fluids, coolers and the wing add more weight than the composites can shed, and that's why the ZR1 is slightly heavier at 3560 lbs.
