Christmas is not just a time for buying presents, cleaning and decorating the home. (In our country, building nativity scenes and decorating coniferous trees is the main focus.) But we also get together with friends, work colleagues and more distant family members. One typical meeting place is a pub.

Once a year I also meet up with my former classmates from university. We meet in less usual places. This time we met at the Bazén Café in the former Karlín Barracks.

Jednou za rok se také setkávám se svými bývalými spolužáky z univerzity. Scházíme se na méně obvyklých místech. Tentokrát jsme se sešli v kavárně Bazén v bývalých Karlínských kasárnách.
Za mého mládí bylo v zimě více sněhu a mrazy byly jaksi mrazovatější. Ale i teď v zimě semo tamo trocha toho sněhu napadne.

The barracks are a complex of buildings built between 1846-1849. The buildings were gradually modified according to the needs of the army. Soldiers were stationed here until 2013. I also got here when they were still here. It now houses a local community cultural center and several commercial restaurants, bars and pubs. One business was the site of our reunion.

Kasárna jsou komplexem budov postavených v letech 1846-1849. Budovy byly postupně upravovány podle potřeb armády. Vojáci zde byli umístěni až do roku 2013. Také já jsem se sem dostal, když tu ještě byli. Nyní zde sídlí místní komunitní kulturní centrum a několik komerčních restaurací, barů a hospod. V jednom z podniků se konal náš sraz.

Nevím, jestli se tu koupali koně nebo důstojníci. Rozhodně je to poprvé, co jsem se opíjel ve vypuštěném bazénu. Je to tedy rozhodně zvláštní místo. Má to tu atmosféru. A byli jsme tu rozhodně nejstarší.

Pohled zezadu, od záchodu. Tady si nejsem jist anglickým překladem. Od záchodu, nebo ze záchodu... Ale fakt to bylo uzavřené. Zas tak "free" to tam nebylo. A záchody nebyly ani genderově neutrální...
But lest I forget. Frankly, I'm not here for the beer, I'm here for old friends. But it's nice to write something about the beer.
Beer is very cheap in the Czech Republic. Prices are in Czech crowns. 1 euro = approximately 25 crowns. I don't think I could buy a beer in a pub for 2 euros anywhere else in the world.
This establishment offers beer from the Kladno microbrewery in Kročehlavy. I've only had one ten-degree beer. I wasn't offended by it, but I wasn't thrilled either.
Taste-wise I was surprised by the beer Václav 11 Murica APA. It belongs to the American Pale Ale style. The beer is drinkable and dominated by citrus flavours and aromas. Alcohol only 4,5%. Václav is named after its owner. The owner of the "flying brewery" is Mr. Václav Strnad.
I drank four of these beers in one evening. My head definitely didn't hurt after them and my perception of reality was not disturbed. I can recommend it.

Ale abych nezapomněl. Upřímně řečeno, nejsem tu kvůli pivu, jsem tu kvůli starým přátelům. Ale sluší se o něm přeci něco napsat.
Proč sem dováží pivo z Kročehlav, kladenské části, nevím. Desetistupňové jsem dal jen jedno na žízeň. Neurazilo mě, ale ani nenadchlo.
Oproti tomu mě chuťově zaujalo pivo Václav 11 Murica APA. Patří ke stylu American Pale Ale. Svrchněkvašenec, jestli se nepletu. Pivo je pitelné a převládají v něm citrusové chutě i vůně. Obsah alkoholu je pouze 4,5 %. Václav se jmenuje po majiteli "létajícího pivovaru", panu Václavu Strnadovi. Ale víc se o vlastním pivu rozepisovat ostýchám. Na taková hodnocení jsou mezi námi jinší experti.
Pro českého čtenáře. Setkání se nekonalo včera. Mezi mými exspolužáky jsou tři zaměstnanci pražské filosofické fakulty. A jsou vpořádku.
