Who and when he founded the castle is not known. The region around the mid-14th century belonged to the descendants of the growing Markvartic family, which were Lemberk and Vartenberk. At the end of the century, Markvart of Vartenberg, home-reigning, rebelled against King Wenceslas IV. He reacted quickly, Zbiroh and the neighboring Hrubý Rohozec besieged, conquered in 1390 and confiscated everything. Zbiroh then sold Otto from Berg to Trosk. He rebuilt it and retained it during the entire Hussite wars. The castle belonged to the King Zikmund's support, but later they were occupied by the Lappas, thus being re-captured by the land and broken in 1442.
