Not Always a Resume

A recent client of From A to Z wanted to work for a company that seemed a little off the beaten path. Not all companies have a rigid corporate standard. Some companies strive to show their unique workforce to illustrate the creativity they offer.

When applying to a company like this it’s not always a resume that they ask to be submitted.

In this particular case, the company wanted a short essay describing why the French Revolution began.

Here’s the article that From A to Z generated with the help of Wikipedia for factual information:

The French Revolution began on May 5th 1789 for a variety of reasons.

The main catalyst being the Treaty of Paris, signed by representatives of King George III of Great Britain and Representatives of America. The signing took place in Paris, France, on September 3rd 1783. The treaty officially ended the American Revolutionary War. The people of France officially recognized that they no longer needed the nobility to manage their affairs.

This Enlightened philosophy began to grow as most people in France reasoned that they did not get treated fairly by the nobility or the Catholic Church. Tradition made it clear that the care of the people rested with these two institutions.

However, the cost of wars left the monarchy with little money to help the common people. While conversely the Catholic Church owned most of the land in France while being exempted from paying taxes. Yet both the nobility and the church enjoyed a lavish lifestyle.

The burden of maintaining French society rested heavily on the poor people of France who struggled for a time under the obligations of this traditional society. Many starved while performing hard labor in the fields. As time went on the strains of this relationship cracked the vase of the social order.

“Let them eat cake” became a quote attributed to Queen Marie-Antoinette circa 1789. Historians can debate if she really uttered this phrase or not. Only no one debates the fact that the people of France dealt with a bread shortage at the time. Cake cost more than bread, and so this phrase became an insult to the common man that the nobility underestimated.

Tensions increased in France as the peasants began to flex their muscles, and so the French Revolution began.

Finally, on June 20th 1791, King Louis XVI attempted to flee Paris with his family in the hope of restoring order to his country. The attempt failed, and the humiliating blunder turned into an accusation of treason that led to the execution of the royal family.

The French Revolution ended on November 9th 1799 with Napoleon Bonaparte taking power in France.
